Need Suggestion

I got email from the adcom of a college(top ten LAC) that i was waitlisted last year. they said if I complete just 1 semester at my current college they are willing to reactivate my application as a freshmen. Is this is a good idea considering im an international student and that I will have to drop out from my current school? the other option is I apply as a transfer student. Which is the better option

bump anyone. please i really have to decide soon. Any suggestion would mean a lot

Are they going to accept you outright if you take their offer? If so, it’s worth considering.

Have you checked the College Board website to see what the admission rate is for fr vs. transfers?

How much dropping out of your current school after 1 sem depends on your personal situation and how you’d deal with that “down time” before school starts in the fall.

It doesn’t sound like the WL school is guaranteeing you admission for next fall, so you take the risk of dropping out of your current school and then not being admitted to the other one.

You could take a leave of absence from your current school for second semester. If you take a leave of absence you won’t lose your spot where you currently are.

Do you want to go to this school now? Transfer acceptance rates are much lower than they are for freshmen.

^^
I dont think they are going to admit me outright. I was waitlisted but I dont think that would help so much. My current school is a tier-3 school and i really dont like it here. The school im applying to is a top LAC school and If possible id go there. But im not sure if i should risk dropping out. Specially since im a international student and will be out of status if i do so.
Can’t I just go on with the second semester while I apply as a freshmen and If i get accepted( i think the result comes out on april) i’ll drop out and go there as a freshmen? Will there be any problems later on if i do so?

I would double check with the LAC if you can continue with second semester at your current school. (It is unclear how you’re wording this).

You don’t have to drop out of anywhere. You can take a leave of absence for next semester, which means that you would take a break from your current college and return next fall.

If the LAC says you can continue at your current school then you can apply to the LAC as a freshman. If you are accepted, you can withdraw from your tier 3 school and transfer to the LAC. If you transfer, you may end up as a freshman or a sophomore depending how your credits transfer.

You need to check the website and find out the LACs exact definition of fr and transfer admissions. Some schools consider you a transfer if you’ve taken ANY post HS college coursework, others permit you to take up to a semester, others less than a year. If the school only permits you to do 1 sem to still be considered a fr, the problem with attending a second sem and then dropping out if accepted is that: 1) you will lose the money you spent on the second semester; and 2) You will likely be quitting after the deadline to drop classes, so you will have Ws on your transcript.

Agree with c_r that if you should check your current school about taking a leave of absence rather than just quitting. However, you will likely have to take a leave before the semester starts, not in the middle (unless you have a valid reason, like illness).

Your Student Visa status is a completely different matter, you need to go to the primary source (ie. the US Dept. of State) to find out what happens if you’re out of school for a semester.
