The only way that I will go to UW is if I am in a sorority because it is such a big school. My older brother went to UW and said he had a hard time making friends because it is such a big school. I'm outgoing but I think joining a sorority to make friends is a good idea for me. Anyway, I was wondering what people have heard about them. The Greek Row at UW is pretty impressive. What is the Greek system known for? Do they have a good academic record? Are people able to easily make friends without joining a sorority/ frat? How does bidding work? ETC. Any advice/ info will be of great help in my decision to join. I wish you all the best of luck in your application process. GO HUSKIES!

I’m a freshman at UW from out of state and I would definitely recommend joining a sorority or going somewhere else because it is kind of hard to make friends at UW. I have plenty of acquaintances but very few actual good friends. In my opinion there are 5 categories of people that stick together:

Foreign Students

Greeks

Athletes

Commuters

Locals (who hang out w/ friends from high school and don’t branch out)

It feels like almost everyone at UW is Greek. The Greek Community does have a good academic record. However, I would actually look at other schools to go to. I’m actually considering the possibility of transferring right now. There doesn’t seem like there is a sense of community here and it actually feels more like a community college in all honesty as far as interactions between people. UW does have a good academic reputation. Class sizes are also huge for general classes. And for anyone who comments on here about hating on UW and that I’m 100% wrong etc., please understand that I want UW to be a great school for me and I don’t want to transfer, but my experience at UW hasn’t been the greatest so far. My best advice would be that when you’re touring the schools that you are looking at, that you talk to current students (other than the orientation leader who will tell you that their respective school is the greatest in the world).

I am also a freshman at UW but I have had a completely different experience than the person above me. Although I went to a high school in Seattle none of my close friends ended up going to UW so I knew that I would have to make new friends.

Long story short, I met a bunch of really cool people during the first week in my dorm and I currently have a group of 10-12 close friends that I hang out with all the time.

I’m not even a particularly outgoing person but it just kind of happened. Even if you don’t meet people in your dorm you can still join clubs and meet people that way. UW honestly doesn’t seem that big.

Of course if you go Greek you will have no problems meeting people.
