So I need to start preparing myself to apply for internships for next summer. Obviously on your resume you have to have references but the problem is that I’ve only held one job since I was 16 (now 19). I will use my manager at that job as a reference but other than that, there is no one else I can use. I do not have any faculty at my school that I can use either. Will this be a problem in the application process?
You don’t have to have references on your resume. If you don’t have any, don’t put any.
^ Okay, but then what if you need them during the application process? I needed them for my job at Walmart, which was not very competitive.
@cmason8869 if you have volunteered anywhere for some time, you can sometimes get references that away (did this for my first job). Other than that, I don’t know.
Not sure I understand that you have no faculty at your school who you can use… how is that possible? If you’ve taken classes, you can choose a professor, lecturer, or TA to act as a reference.
Of course, professional references aren’t the biggest concern for internship applications, generally. You are doing an internship to get experience, which implies that you shouldn’t need to have experience already. To that end, personal references are probably also acceptable. When I was doing this type of thing, I used the director of the singing group I was in as one reference and a professor as another reference. I also served as someone’s reference when they were applying to jobs.
