Need to decide: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or San Diego State?

I got admitted into both colleges with a declared major in Business Administration Marketing. I'm planning on also minoring in Journalism and getting heavily involved with the school paper. Which school should I attend?

SDSU has a great business school so it would be a no brainer for me. I think its generally considered the 3rd best undergrad bus. school in the state.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Nice advise, but I think theillestboyee would benefit from a bit more details and evidence to back up what you've said.

Where is SDSU named the 3rd best undergrad bus. school in the state?
Why Cal Poly San Luis Obispo?

I should have elaborated. SDSU's reputation is very strong in the business world, particularly in Ca, despite this not necessarily being reflected in biased ranking websites. Saying it is ranked 3rd is not the product of anything you'll find on the web, but from my own experiences. I have spoken with professors and counselors about it, but more importantly, with many people in the business world. I'm lucky enough to have a close family member who is an executive recruiter and works closely with many top businesses from around the country. My opinion is largely based on the sentiments of his colleagues that both he and I have spoken to about it. SDSU provides a great business education and placement for those willing to work for it. From what I have gathered, the only two schools in the state with a better rep for undergrad bus. are Berkley and USC. Take my opinion for what it's worth, but know that I have done my research, and do not underestimate the business education and opportunities SDSU can offer.

Just in case anybody's wondering, SDSU is ahead of SLO in US News undergrad bus. rankings by 10 spots...

What the the other 2 undergrad business schools in the state ahead of SDSU in your opinion? (just out of curiosity)

It pays to read the thread...

No offense to SDSU.. I applied there and got accepted, but San Diego State is kind of a joke.. Cal Poly's Orfalea College of Business is 2nd in the state behind UC Berkeley's Haas.. It's business program is top 70 in the country. SLO is in a awesome city with a great social scene and a lot of positives..

SDSU is gonna be in a sketchy position for the next couple years.. In the last 14months, the mexican drug cartels in Tijuana and other border cities near SD have had a lot of violence. There has been over 7,000 casualties in the Mexican drug war this year. My advice is to keep a little distance from the border.

Also SDSU is dominated by its frat scene.. If your not part of a frat, your gonna have to pay money to get into partys and overall will have a pretty shady college social life. SDSU created the "elephant walk", look it up on Urban Dictionary.

I dont wanna hate on SDSU, but I would encourage you to go to school with a smart student population, and a city thats chill and safe.

Dont get me wrong SDSU isnt a bad school, its just that Cal Poly is A LOT better.

Oop, I'm not going to argue with you about your opinion of SDSU academically, but its rediculous to advise somebody to not attend the university because of TJ. The school, and the city as a whole, is so far removed from the danger it isn't even worth mentioning, unless a student happens to want to go down there. I've lived in San Diego my whole life and have never heard of somebody innocent and north of the border being attacked due to what is going on down south. I've even gone down there multiple times in the past year (stupid I know, but haven't gone lately) and haven't been hurt or seen violence. You can say what you want about the school, but the business program is excellent, however saying it is too dangerous to attend because of TJ is rediculous in my opinion.

Are you even in/from San Diego?

No im not from San Diego.

Oz. your right, I dont think TJ will affect most of SDSU students.

SDSU in my opinion is the 2nd best CSU, behind Cal Poly SLO.. But that distance between SDSU and Cal Poly is enormous..

Congrats on getting accepted to 2 awesome business schools, good luck with your decision.

Ya I really don't know where to go either. I got accepted to Cal Poly for Construction Management and SDSU for Business Marketing.

I heard Cal Poly is getting a new Construction Management building, and it sounds pretty exciting. However, I heard that living in Cal Poly is different compared to other colleges. (Could anyone emphasize on that?)

I fell in love with SDSU the first time I visited it, so this is going to be a hard decision.

Both SDSU and CP SLO are very good schools. If you are a 'city' person, you might get bored at SLO. If you're looking for a smaller, rural, college-town environment, SLO is great. There are no large cities near by - Santa Barbara is almost 2 hours away, but Pismo and Avilla Beach are minutes away. You should go visit the campus to see if it's right for you. I was admitted to both and chose CP SLO ...

Both schools seem great academically from what my major is so I think it's going to come down to which campus I like the best.

Okay so im in a VERY similar situation. i am currently choosing between Cal Poly SLO and SDSU and am majoring in business administration. I just put business as my major because im not sure what i want to really do with my life yet and i might want to change majors in the future. Im a very social city girl who loves to part but i want to take my education seriously and still have fun, but not TOO much fun. I’m open to both options and i’m visiting the campuses soon but i still have no idea which school to choose either.

If you’re a city person, I’d go to San Diego State. If you like nature, I’d go to Cal Poly San Luis… That’s all it really comes down to. SDSU has an AMAZING social scene, but it’s not overwhelming. I actually really like it because if I feel like going out, there will always be something happening. If I feel like staying in then that’s totally fine too- nobody judges and you can just do your own thing.

I have a lot of family up in San Luis though, a couple of close cousins that go to Cal Poly and one at Cuesta (community college), and some friends from my graduating class that are freshmen at Cal Poly, and they definitely all have a ton of fun too.

So really it comes down to which area you like the most, you’ll have plenty of equal academic opportunities at both. When you start ranking business schools that are so close then you start to lose perspective on the whole picture: go where you’ll do best, if you go to a school with a good business program then that’s enough in that department… what it really comes down to is how you personally do and how you show that you’re qualified for the job. Cal Poly and SDSU are both state schools, they’re not the best but they’re not the worst… neither will let you ride on their prestige so in both cases you need to work to show that you have what it takes.

Cal Poly SLO hands down.

So what did you guys end up choosing? I’m considering applying to SDSU, so just trying to find out everything about it.

Thanks!

USC and UCB was mentioned earlier, but what about University San diego and Santa Clara? According to Businessweek rankings.

as someone who is from san diego but goes to cal poly, i think i have a pretty unbiased opinion…

SDSU: huuuge greek life, guys you can’t even get into parties unless you’re in a frat. girls are all clone-type slutty blondes (not being biased here, i’m blonde) and it’s EXTREMELY crowded. google the sdsu frat coke bust from a few years ago…however san diego is a GREAT city with tons to do, and sdsu is a beautiful campus. it is very hard to get classes though due to overcrowding, and while not a commuter school, it’s more of one than SLO.

SLO: *****in’ parties. not gonna lie…it is about 65% male, sooooo girls? you want guys? we got em. everyone here is attractive, like literally. beautiful people all around from all over the state and even the country. while we are impacted, it’s a great school with an amazing reputation but i’d only recommend goign here if you have a pretty definite idea of what you want to major in. i have a friend trying to switch from english to poli sci, and it’s kind of difficult to say the least…i personally have had NO trouble getting classes i need either, and the on-campus living experiences is second to none. there are tons of different types too, from typical residence halls to apartments, motel-style, and smaller towers with coed floors. I RECOMMEND LIVING IN YOSEMITE HALL :)
