Need to decide on a backup college. Please help!?

I’m currently on the waitlist for the Fall 2015 semester at the University of Delaware. I was accepted for the Spring 2016 semester there, but I didn’t want to start my freshman year a semester late so I declined that offer. The University of Delaware is my first choice, but I need to choose another college to go to in case I don’t get off the waitlist. The other colleges I was accepted to are:

  • James Madison University (5 hours away)
  • Rutgers New Brunswick campus (45 minutes away)
  • Richard Stockton College of NJ (1 hour away)
  • Monmouth University (1 hour away)

I don’t know which one to choose! I was leaning towards James Madison University, but then I visited it last weekend and I realized how far away a 5 hour car ride is. I don’t know if I want to be that far away from my family since I’m really close to them. I liked Monmouth University until I saw online that their academics aren’t very good and a friend of my mom said that all the students there don’t take their work seriously and just party. I didn’t really like Rutger’s campus. Richard Stockton has really bad dorms so I probably won’t choose that college. What should I do?!

Are all of your options affordable?

@GMTplus7 I get 2 years of college free since my dad was in the military. If I chose Rutgers or Richard Stockton I would almost be debt free when I graduate. I’m not sure about Monmouth since it’s a private school and I don’t know how much financial aid they’d give me. James Madison would be the most expensive since its out of state, but it’s still affordable.

Why don’t you pick Rutgers, then? Rutgers is a great school, truly, and its part of the Big 10 which is arguably one of the most exciting sports conferences in the nation.

Of the schools on your list, rutgers is a top ranked school by job recruiters, plus u said u could graduate mostly debt free.

@minohi There are 2 reasons why I’m not sure if I should pick Rutgers. The first reason is that Rutgers is less than an hour away from home. I want to become more independent when I go away to college. I don’t want my parents visiting all the time or having them tell me to come home every weekend. The second reason is that most of the other seniors at my school are going to Rutgers. I want to start fresh and not see anyone I know at college. I know I probably won’t since it’s a big school, but I feel like going to Rutgers isn’t that big of a deal since so many others in my grade are going.

I’d vote for Rutgers too. You don’t have clear estimates about potential financial aid at the other places, and you could end up with a big shock when the GI Bill money runs out.

Happykid graduated from a university that is 65 minutes from our house in average traffic conditions. We were able to be there whenever she wanted, and she could get home whenever she wanted. But she was so busy with her life there and we were so busy with our lives here that sometimes a couple of months went by without us seeing her in person. Several of her high school friends were also there, but the only one she saw on a regular basis was the one in her own department. I expect your life at Rutgers would be pretty much the same.

Of the choices you have Rutgers NB is a great choice for a legitimate top quality school.

The others you listed are not in the same league with Rutgers.

Your perspective is common for NJ students and it is very shortsighted.

Didn’t u start out saying u didn’t want to be far away from your parents? I wouldnt assume you’ll be seeing your parents every weekend. Nor would i assume youll be constantly seeing all your highschool classmates.

I’d go with Rutgers in a heartbeat. I think it’s the best choice academically, and New Brunswick has more to offer than the other communities (I think it gets a very unfair rap).

You really think you’ll see your classmates among the other 8,000 freshman students?
