do u need to list any accomplishments or awards that you have received before 9th grade?

I don't know if you need to, but i recall that if you took a language or math class that the school wants to see it should be listed. If you won some major award before getting to high school, then probably put it. Do you need to? I don't think it is required . . .

putting stuff from before 9th grade seems kinda desperate. do it if it is something absolutely outstanding, but otherwise try to avoid it.

No, they usually don't want anything from before high school. Some schools don't even take into account your grades from ninth grade.

If there was an activity that you were involved in before 9th grade and continued it through high school, it would probably not be a bad idea to include it.
For example, I have been involved in choir at my church since I was 10, so when I listed it on apps I just put that I did it in grades 4-12. In a case like that it's probably ok, otherwise yes, avoid listing things before high school.

adding to the above comments: if there was a major (like on the national or international level) award/honor u recieved or if u did any summer program such as Duke TIP or the one with Hopkins, etc.

also if u took high school (or even college) level courses and got credit for it, u might want to list it

I won my grade level at the district spelling bee in 5th through 8th grade, and advanced to regionals twice, placing as high as 13th at one point. Is that worth listing?

sure, why not

no--I wouldn't list a spelling bee unless it was national and you won.

haha it is all relative. If that is one of your better activities, list it. Some of these cc posters are unreal. Ellemnope, isn't that similar to saying oh, you played the violin? But you only won state competitions! Don't waste your time. It is relative to you, ihateschool007, but you could probably find better awards to list. It does not look desperate- not everyone wins 50 awards in high school. Also, like most things related to college admissions, it's one small factor, and not a main issue. An award can help you a little, but few can help you a lot, and many do practically nothing relative to grades, essays, and other ecs. It can be a nice push, though.

Winning something and listing it on a college app are two different things. It does indeed look desperate if you're putting an honorable mention from some seventh grade spelling bee on your Princeton app. I had a college classmate who played a solo piano recital in Carnegie Hall at age 11 -- THAT, you should put. I knew another who was Little Cosette in Les Miz at 8. Same deal. And I agree that it can be relevant to read that a student who is, say, a figure skater, has been skating X number of hours a week since age 3. But barring that kind of story, I'd err on the side of leaving childhood exploits out of the picture.

What about Jeopardy winner age 12?

Actual Jeopardy, on TV? I'd put that for sure. I was on when I was 15, and I would have told them about it no matter what age I was (and even though I didn't win).

Yes, she was on Jeopardy on TV.

I know this is desperate...but what about 7th and 8th grade?

7th grade-1st place in category (botany) Junior Academy Science
2nd place in category (botany) Alamo Regional Science Fair
State Qualifier
8th grade-4th place grand prize (botany) Junior Academy Science

no, stick to grades 9-12.

generally, the answer is not to inlcude pre-9th grade. But if you started a sport or some other activity and continued in high school, you should certainly include that, ie: violin, fencing, whatever x 10 years.

You should also include high school awards won in middle school. For instance, every year there are a few middle schoolers among the 250 or so students who qualify for the USA Math Olympiad. They should certainly include that.
