I got the first D of my life last Spring in Physics and unless I talk to the professor and find some way to change it, it will stay that way. It was Physics II so I have to retake it in my Spring semester. But apps get sent in before that, so I will need to list that I got a D right? This will destroy my GPA if they don't see the replacement grade. So my question is if I retake it and get an A or B will they average out the grades or kick off the D and factor the A or B into my GPA?

If it’s at the same community college, they should replace the grade. That is, get rid of the D and factor in the A/B. If it’s a different community college you’d have to ask the counselor. CSU’s average the grade out but UC’s will take the higher grade. Or so I was told.

I’m a little confused as to what LAMuncher is trying to say but I’ll give the question a crack… On the UC application, you list what classes you intend to take in the upcoming Spring where they’ll see that you plan on taking the course over again. So that looks good as oppose to not taking it again (and besides physics is a tough class) however…

If it’s a prereq (and I’m assuming it is), that really hurts your chances. If they grant you admission, it’ll be assuming you can maintain a certain overall GPA and prereq GPA (usually a 3.0 but I’ve heard of it being different). Also…

If you don’t get admission, you’re appeal could work. You could inform them that you got an A or B which changes both your overall GPA and prereq GPA which will hopefully lead to a reverse decision…

Unfortunately it is a pre-req since i’m a Bio major.

Usually Physics II isn’t a class they demand you finish before transferring so I’m hoping they won’t worry too much about it and be fine with me retaking it.

Also just so I’m clear, Fall 2010 grades do get factored into the GPA they calculate right? (this is for applying for Fall 2011)

^yes.

10char.

If you are going to major in Biology you can not have a D in Physics on your record so you have to retake the course. First though, you should do some serious self-reflection on why you got a D the first time you took the course. I was an Astronomy major as an undergraduate and had to take many Physics classes and fully understand how difficult a subject it is. Was the problem that you did not take the course seriously and did not put in the maximum effort that Physics demands? If so that can be fixed with more effort on your part and you should be able to get at least a C. If you really tried but were just unable to comprehend the concepts presented in this course or do the problems that is a little more problematic. If there are Physics help programs take advantage of them and do not hesitate to go to your professor during his office hours to get more complete explanations of topics discussed in class and the textbook. Also do not overload your schedule during the term you retake Physics, you are going to need a lot of time to work on Physics if you are going to raise that grade to at least a C and hopefully a B or A.

lol nah I didn’t try very hard in the class but it also had to do with the fact that I was taking it along with O-Chem and they both were on the same days so it was really stressful studying for both of them at the same time. I got a B in Physics I and I barely studied for it either but the concepts were easier IMO. I also had a terrible, disorganized professor who is no longer teaching the class (gee I wonder why) and my course load will definitely be lighter so I won’t have a problem studying more for the class.
