I am wondering, do students applying for CS grad schools really need to take the GRE computer science subject test?

I have visited a few CS top grad schools and they all say the GRE computer science subject test is optional. So then, I want to know how much weight they stress on the GRE computer science score in the admission process.

If you don’t mind taking it, you can take it, and only submit it if you score really well, like 80-90+%. My personal opinion is that if they don’t require it, it’s not worth the hassle of studying for it, especially if your application is otherwise excellent; but I could be wrong.

Don’t. Results may hurt more than they can help.
You have already demonstrated that you know enough CS as indicated by your coursework, grades, and recommendations.

DS’s MS program for CS didn’t require the test and he was a ME undergrad. He knew a smattering of programs but nothing really deep or exotic. He did learn certain aspects of C (self-taught) for his master’s project.
