My father objects to starting the FAFSA this week because he has not yet completed his most recent taxes... whatever year would be completed to submit this tax season. What information might he need for the FAFSA that he can't have until he completes his taxes? How do other people complete their FAFSA before taxes? Assuming I get my FAFSA submitted to schools before their RD Feb 15th deadline, are there any repercussions if it gets filled out in February? Thank you!

Soooner is always better in regards to filing for FA… it’s a first come, first served goody. If he has his 2010 taxes completed and 2011’s information is basically the same, just use that information and put “will file” on the FAFSA. Any information known to be significantly different, adjust accordingly. Guestimates are what is expected, but you should try to be within 10% either way of the correct number.

You can complete the FAFSA using your best estimates for 2011which can be based on your parents’ end of year pay stubs. Use the best possible estimates. Complete you FAFSA and indicate “will file” as your tax filing status. This means you will file but have not yet done so. Submit the FAFSA to your schools. Then your parents need to complete their taxes ASAP after february 1. Go back in and amend your FAFSA to reflect the real numbers on the 2011 tax return. Change your tax filing status to “taxes completed” and resubmit.

Your parents and you need to complete your taxes ASAP. This is not the year to wait until April to complete those taxes.
