Plans to visit Yale--Princeton--American University over Veteran's Day weekend Thurs to Sat
With tolls, gas $$, traffic & parking issues and being NOT familiear with DC wondering if we would be better off taking the train (preferrable non-Amtrak to keep costs down). Is it doable and where would I get the train schedule???

Depends on where you’re coming from. I am from Ohio and we drove to American, then Yale. We probably spent $20-30 on tolls alone. Parking was not too much of a problem on both campuses. American University provides you with a fee waiver so you don’t have to pay for parking. At Yale, we used the parking meters on the street.
Sorry, I’m not familiar with the train system.

I don’t think there is any way to get from DC to NY on a train without taking Amtrak. Once in NY you can take NJ Transit to Princeton to/from Penn Station. You can go to Yale on Metro North to/from Grand Central Station. Even if you drive, you should be able to avoid driving in DC by staying at a hotel that’s near a Metro stop and taking the Metro into DC for the day.

You are taking on a lot and I think it will be hard to do it all on a train - but, if you do want to do it, look hard at the schedules to make sure it’s feasible. If it were me, I think I’d drive, but it will not be a fun drive. Good luck!
