Totally overwhelmed with DegreeWorks. Need urgent help with which classes to choose for Honors Undecided Engineering.

the engineering department will help you. not sure what first year engineering looks like this year, but you will need to take the first year engineering classes. then math and chemistry. if you are honors, get some honors hours with first year honors classes or honors classes in the gen. ed requirements like fine arts, english, history, math, chemistry etc.

There is probably a better way to do this, but last year when my son was deciding between Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, I found it helpful to pull up the flow charts of each and see what first semester looked like. They were quite similar - he had no problem switching to Mechanical second semester. The flow charts were much more understandable than DW to me. Good luck.

If he can articulate why he is interested in eng’g in the first place, that might help him find a path. Is he deciding between 2 fields, or every branch of engineering? The previous 2 posters are correct and have good advice - the first year is all about getting the basic math and introductory classes under your belt.

I’m a chemE major and got a nearly flawless schedule. I helped my roommates with theirs too, if you want to PM me I’ll be happy to help!

Also ChemE, and just finished freshman year. My first semester consisted of the intro general engineering classes, intro to ChemE, Chemistry, Calc, CBH, and two one-hour honors classes. There are one-hour intro courses for the various engineering majors, and you can take more than one of these. For example, if your student is coming in without AP English credit, a good first semester would probably be Chem/Physics (whichever they would prefer), Calc, English Comp, Engineering Foundations, and a couple of intro courses for one hour each (e.g. CHE 125, ME 121, ECE 121, etc.). I faced a slightly different setup last year, though.

At bama bound they will give your son a flow chart based on whatever math he is placed,to begin. Te classes are all laid out from there. There is a q and a session with the engineering dept. the day before they register for classes, so you can ask about the classes for gen engineering. M son will be cs, and it was a little different from engineering.

Electrical is same except instead of ME 121, it spaces for a 3 credit HU/FA course.

Many of the Honors UH 155 HYO (First Year courses) meet HU/FA, and UH 210 such as Arts of Tuscaloosa (which has multiple dates/times)

CH 117 is the honors option of CH 101
MATH 145 is the honors option of Math 125

S is in Honors Undecided Engineering. Here is what he was told.

Number 1 priority - schedule and secure first thing. - Take the math you qualify for Calc 125/145 or Calc 126/146, etc. S decided to take Calc 145 even though he has AP credit (He took it as a Junior and is afraid he may have forgotten stuff)

Take Chemistry if you didn’t AP or Clep out of it. If you have had Calc 125/145 and are taking Calc 126/146 (or higher)- you can take Physics instead of Chem

English Comp - unless AP. If they have a high enough score on ACT English, then they can take English 103 to satisfy both Eng 101 and 102 (S is waiting on AP grade, but will qualify for 103 so no English this fall.)

Other Recommended classes
Eng 111 - Intro into Engineering - designed for undecided.
Engineering 103 - they said take Honors versions.
Honors 120 - Honors Connections

In lieu of English and Chem - S decided to take a few of his humanities electives.

Hope this helps.

I agree with looking at the various eng’g disciplines’ first semester’s schedules to see what’s commonly needed.

Usually:

Cal 1 (or Cal II or whatever math level your child is at)
Gen Chem
Bio (how many disciplines need this?)
Frosh Comp
Frosh Eng Program

Thanks so much! In Honors and leaning towards Chemical Engineering.

S’s eng. (civil/enviro) schedule looks a lot like TNTide’s schedule …

Though S had AP Physics credit, it wasn’t calc-based (eng. need this) – he was advised to take Physics, and Calc II instead of skipping over it (had AP Calc) and going to Calc III.

For those Eng. foundations classes, can anyone comment on differences between the honors sections and the regular sections?

^ audellmom - that would be a good question for some BB eng’g advising staff. The Eng’g foundation course (103?) is new this year, so none of our students can comment on that specifically. Take Honors wherever possible is my own parental recommendation.

And further to this discussion about honors courses, here is the specific page which describes the Honors ChBE program withIN the Chem Eng’g department: [Honors Program - Undergraduate Programs - Chemical and Biological Engineering - The College of Engineering - UA](Honors Program – Chemical and Biological Engineering | The University of Alabama)
In some cases, there is a rather big difference between simply graduating with “honors” from the UA Honors College and the DEPARTMENT honors reqs. In Aero Eng’g it is quite difficult to graduate with an Honors AEM degree. I don’t know anything about the Honors ChBE program, but that site/page might help. Here is the Senior ‘checklist’ for gaduating with Honors ChBE: http://che.eng.ua.edu/files/2011/08/honors_checklist.pdf

Here is the similar page with the reqs for Honors Civil: http://cce.eng.ua.edu/files/2011/07/honors_prog_application.pdf

You can access the reqs for each departmental Honors program in Engineering by looking under the College of Engineering, then look under each branch, then look off to the left-hand side and there will be a tab to click on for each Department’s Honors Program. Most eng’g degrees start this honors program track once you are a Junior. Some are by invitation only; some you apply for.

Thanks aeromom, for all the info!
