need your input on transferring?

i'm currently a junior in highschool and i know many of you believe that this is a bit too soon to worry about all that jazz of transferring.. i was originally thinking of going to art school until my mother brought up going to a UC and double majoring in art and another major as a fallback in case art doesn't work out. i definitely do not have the statistics to get into a UC as of right now, so i need to make decision soon. should i go the easy way out of going to art school or transfer to a UC? need your input please and thank you !

transferring is a great option. you can save yourself a TON of money, and take internships/jobs to progress yourself in ways you may not have time/need for at UC. i did it. it’s not that fun, per say, but it was a worthwhile experience

First off, congrats to you for taking the initiative. Second, I think what your mother suggested is great! If you go CCC -> UC, double major in art and ________, you’ll save TONS of money (art school is so expensive!) as well as leave with a valuable degree! Good luck!

You will have a much more versatile degree if you get a BA from a UC or Cal State. Art is a very competitive field and you would have a lot more job options with a BA than with a certificate from an art school. I don’t know what your stats are, but if you can not get into a UC, some of the Cal State schools have very well recognized programs and are easier to be accepted at. My daughters friend graduated in art from Sonoma State and is currently getting her Masters in Washington. She is amazing! You also might look at the Cal Arts program. Another option is to go to a cc and then transfer when you have brought your grades up. And btw, it is not too early to start thinking about this. If you go straight to a 4 yr. program, you will have to apply in less than a year. Good luck!

i think high school students are allowed to enroll concurrently at a local community college. perhaps you should consider that. you can get a head-start on your IGETC classes.

@ tigerstars: I dropped out of high school and came to community college. By far - BY FAR lol the best decision of my life. I had like a 1.6 GPA in high school.

I have a 3.7+ in CCC. It’s so much more interesting, there are less indignant fools at CCC (imo lol I take night classes), and it will save you tons of money.

I got my GED, skipped a grade, and now am going to be starting at a Top 2 UC.

I wouldn’t have gone to college if I had stayed in high school. Please go to a community college and begin ASAP. It’s an awesome system, and one that I’m certain you’ll thank yourself for.

just remember, it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish…i wish i had listened to this way back when…haha

@ kjeon23: So true! So true…lol

Keep in mind though… only begin attending a CC if you feel up for the challenge. A lot of people go straight from high school and still have the lazy high school attitude and get totally screwed before they can even be serious about college and transferring.

If you think you’re up for it, do it. But if you don’t do any homework, poor study habits, and or simply don’t care, don’t do it. Brand new transcript = brand new academic beginning.

^^^^very wise words of wisdom
