need your opinion about financial aid

here is the story -We have been talking back and forth with my S number one preference. However, at this point, the financial aid offer is not finalized because one minor document that they needed. My S wants to send his acceptance to this college, and I"m concerned that the financial aid offer is not officialy finalized. Would it be too risky to do an acceptance if my S doesn't have a final financial aid? your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that the tentative financial aid offer is very good. Our guess is that the final offer won't change because the additional documentation requested is mainly insignificant. But still I feel uneasy about not having a final offer:/

You may lose your deposit if you change your mind because the fin-aid doesn’t come through - but that is not the biggest deal, the biggest deal is you will lose the opportunity for your S to enter another school.

Seems to me I would not “accept” unless you are willing and/or able to make it happen even if the fin-aid does not come through in the amount you need. If the fin-aid package is a deal -breaker, you should probably pick #2 if it offers a package you can live with.

I don’t personally like the “feel” of double deposits as it is not ethical. Not that this is what you are planning but if you do you will have to be prepared for it to potentially reflect badly if you end up with your S trying to transfer to the other school down the road. yuck - rock and a hard place

Thanks #theorymom, my S decision is to go to this particular college or take a year off. So, i guess we need to risk losing the deposit. I wasn’t sure if sending a deposit was a contract? but if it is only the deposit all we could lose then we’re be o.k. with that.

Ask them for an extension of the deadline for your son to accept. Usually colleges will do this if financial aid offers are pending.

if this is his only “real” choice, your S can defer enrollment. You would not lose your deposit or even, in most cases, your scholarships either. Your fin-aid would be refigured at the time of enrollment.
So make the deposit. If the fin-aid does not come through, defer enrollment. S can work and make some money to help pay, you can renegotiate your fin-aid - and your S gets to go to the school he wants to go to.

Yes, what Northstar says too - can’t hurt

theorymom and northstarmom, thanks so much for the advice. I feel better now knowing that S could have some options. Again, thanks.

thinking about it -should we contact Admissions office to get a extension to accept or should we arrange everything with the financial aid office? thanks!

Ask admissions.

thanks northstarmom.
