I have taken CS 1-2 and am currently in CS 3-4 both dual enrollment at my high school. I am scheduled to take AP next year, but right now I am struggling and really dont enjoy writing code. Is computer science all writing code? I enjoy computers and have thought to major in CS, but I just dont like coding. Is that a problem? How much coding is involved in a CS degree because I heard that many CS jobs dont involve programming. Any input would help, than you
CS is not all coding, but it is a lot of it. Most jobs do involve programming. Of course there are lots of other interesting parts of CS, as well as jobs in those fields, but an academic career in CS will involve lots of programming too.
If you don’t enjoy programming at all, I don’t think CS is right for you - liking to use computers and liking CS are not the same thing - when you say “I enjoy computers”, what part specifically do you like?
I enjoy the hardware aspect as well as how web sites are made…do jobs in cyber security or web page developer require much code…HTML doesnt seem too complicated
HTML is not real coding IMO - it’s a very basic formatting language. Web Developers and web coding is mostly Javascript with a lot of variations on the back end ranging from C++/Java/Ruby/Python/C#. It’s very much all about coding in that case.
Cyber Security will be a lot of theoretical and practical CS, and a good knowledge and knack for programming will be needed, as it’s often about fighting creative ways into systems that other programmers will attempt. There’s also cryptography, which is much more math based.
You might look at Computer Architecture or Information Technology and see if those are more to your liking. There will still be some programming involved, but less than in CS.
I have a CS degree and found programming in school to be kinda’ boring and tedious. But if I’m working on an interesting application, that makes all the difference in the world. In those cases, you can’t pull me away from the computer.
