I was filling out my Common Application today and was submitting some information about my choice of colleges. I always thought Rice was under the Early Action program as well as the Early Decision program. However, this year, they only offer Early Decision. Did they just make this switch?

Rice has always been under Early Decision…there was no switch…

Actually in this CC thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/354075-list-colleges-early-action-early-decision-rolling-admissions.html

Rice was listed as having Early Action. However, that was back in 2007 so I don’t know if the college changed?

Rice did offer the Early Action plan in the past, but no longer does. I only know this because I did a research project on Rice in 8th grade. lol. I don’t know when the change was made though.

there also used to be an Interim decision. but yeah now only ED and regular

07 was the last time they did the Interim Decision. It is now only Early Decision or regular.

I think it was Interim Decision you are talking about.

Also if you read page two of that thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/354075-list-colleges-early-action-early-decision-rolling-admissions-2.html#post4465532

So that thread was wrong.

i think the posts say that Early Action was there like 5 years ago

Oh my bad didn’t see that link.
But the simple answer to the OP’s question “Did they just make this switch?” is no.

Thanks to all for the clarification! I’m gonna have to find somewhere else to apply early now :(

If you really like the school, apply regular. If not, apply regular decision to Rice… don’t apply early someplace for the sake of applying early… u are not going to be increasing your chances of getting in by applying early (ED and EA pools tend to have stronger applicants).

slik nik, I’m guessing you meant “If you really like the school, apply early” :D

also take your financial situation into consideration.
I hate being the obnoxious person whenever people ask ED v RD to bring up finances, but as someone whose financial situation changed DRASTICALLY over just a few months, you can never really discount it.

Basically if you have all the $$ sitting there with no doubt it will go anywhere, apply ED. If you anticipate having the $$ available or you anticipate getting awesome financial aid, apply ED but make sure you and your family are comfortable with it.
If you do not have the $$ and are sure you will not get financial aid…this will not be a situation because never be sure you won’t get financial aid. But if you have a hugely high income that for some reason can’t be used for your college education, this is definitely a factor when choosing to apply ED.

Basically, even if you’re positive you want to attend Rice, ED is not a no-brainer.

@cdz512: yep that’s what I meant… thanks for correcting me :)
