the gym is free for undergrads, i believe.

It would seem Pearlygate didn't actually go to Penn

I did my undergraduate in biology at Univ of Wash, and now I'm doing my master in CS at Stanford.

LOL that's true if only people can get one master in their lifetime. But do you forget that people can have many masters and bachelor degree if they want?

Anyway, I have one master from Penn.

Penn charged $70 for application to the Young Scholars program. The fee ($25) was waived for Villanova's HS program. Greedy.
Philly has improved incredibly since I was an undergrad back when wheels were being invented. Even West Philly is not the hotbed of crime it was. Great town for walking around and looking at history, great restaurants- including very cheap Chinatown- and only 2 hours from NY.

negatives? expensive. tuition's well worth it, but the cost of living in philly and around campus is high

Edited.........................

I wanted UPenn to be my ED school. All this negative talk is deterring me. How do I know if this is the right college for me. How do I know if I should apply early?

Every college has it's negatives. Just pick the one where the positives far outweigh the bad.

cout<<"lol
";

cout<<"Yay C++";

System.out.println("JAVA bends C++ over and proceeds to...");

Seriously. Go start a thread in every other Ivy asking about negatives. Sure enough, you'll find 'em.

System.out.println("Abhi needs to stop having a dirty mind");

JAVA bending C++ over?

Omg, omg, omg, you gotta be kidding me

Aaaahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahaaaaaa

cout << "Java - the language that makes VB look low-level." << endl;

hahahaha its great to see somebody passionate about their programming languages...

seriously tho legend, chill - you are def right. the java vm is incredibly laggy (garbage collection always kicks in at the most inopportune moments) and memory management w/ C++ is much easier. i have a knack for making memory leaks, so i use Java for the simpler stuff.

Uhh it's really cold and expensive. Plus, you have to work really hard and write a lot. Plus, you're in Philly. Sorry.

Those in the know view this as a definite POSITIVE, not a negative:

are you serious? The food in Philly is very cheap. You can get a fried rice for $4.00 (thanks lee anh and yue kee!!) heck you can't even get the same quality food for double the price in most west coast city.

Also, try living off campus... rent is pretty decent, just don't live on campus. Penn is trying to rip you off... $680 for one bedroom+shared bathroom... crazy. I paid less than $500 for my room and I used to live around 40th and walnut.

$4 for rice? Is the west coast really that outrageously expensive that you've been conditioned to pay that much for something that gets given out free at many restaurants?

Living in the city's going to be more expensive than what many people are used to in suburbia or other cities. Watching movies, getting around, buying groceries will all be more expensive than what many people are used to paying, and to a student for whom $50k tuition is expensive, the additional nickel and dime-ing of living in the city can be a burden.
