I was just offered a Full Tuition Scholarship from University of Pittsburgh. I would really like to attend UT Austin, and I am a Texas Resident. I was wondering if it would be possible to leverage my Pitt Scholarship to get UT to offer me any sort of financial aid (they’re giving me nothing right now)? They are pretty closely ranked on USNews (53 vs 62 I think?) and Pitt’s BME is tied with UT (I would be doing BME at Pitt, but would be studying in McCombs at UT). Any advice?
Public uni’s don’t usually consider offers of other colleges. Especially if it is a merit scholarship, they have their own methods and standards to award merit. I don’t see anything would come of it. They certainly aren’t going to be looking at grad dept rankings or anything like that. Of course you can always ask.
You can try, but UT has made it clear that they’re focusing their aid on “need,” not merit.
OP, decision day (May 1) is nearly upon you. It’s really late to attempt to negotiate/leverage offers at this point. You have left the FA office little time. I advise you to make any such inquiry ASAP, but as the others have stated, this does not seem like a good negotiating situation anyway.
Yeah, called UT and they don’t negotiate. Thanks for the advice everyone
Go to Pitt, see the world. If you don’t like it, you can transfer back to UT and perhaps be in the same financial position.
@twoinanddone I have 81 semester credit hours already, so transferring isn’t really an option, as I’m trying to finish ASAP. I’m going to Med School afterwards, so I was thinking even if I went to UT, I could go out of state for med school?
Yes you can go OOS for med school. But I would take the Pitt $ and run.
If you’re going to med school, you want to keep debt down. Take Pitt’s money and go for it.
Pitt is awesome!!! And clearly they want you. Congrats on that big scholarship.
Hey everyone, thanks for all the advice and congratulations because I found out about the Pitt scholarship just 4 days ago, I couldn’t change my mind that quickly. I had never visited Pitt or done much research. Had I found out back in November or even a month earlier, I would have visited Pitt and been able to make a much more informed decision. I didn’t feel comfortable with picking Pitt with such little knowledge about the school (although I’m sure it’s a wonderful school), so I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin. Thank you very much again
