"negotiating" financial offer

It’s an OOS public school my daughter wants to go to. Our EFC is high enough so that we will not qualify for any government money. I was hoping to get some merit money.

Ahhh…

Is this UMaryland? Are her stats high for the school? For a good chance at merit aid, stats need to be in the top 25% for the school.

edited to add…

*GPA 4.09 (w)
SAT 720 M, 580 CR, 620 W
*

If it is UMaryland…

Test Scores Middle 50% of First-Year Students

SAT Critical Reading: 580 - 680
SAT Math: 610 - 710
SAT Writing: - - (UMaryland doesn’t seem to count Writing)

Her math + CR score is a 1300. That is around the middle for the school…

Yes, it is Maryland that she really wants to go to. My husband is pushing her to take a second look at Towson since they offered her a large merit award or go to Rutgers which is instate.

I was hoping if I contacted Maryland and sent them a copy of the Towson letter, they may give her a little bit of money. Anything they give us would be a help. She also got into Penn State which is her second choice right now but I haven’t received a financial package from them yet either.

We should be relieved that she has so many options, but it is difficult when her first choice will cost us so much more than some of the others.

*

I’m sure others will chime in here, but Penn State isn’t going to give anything other than a student loan. PSU only gives merit to Shreyers honors students and only gives them small amounts (like 4500).

Sending UM-CP a copy of Towson’s scholarship is a good idea. Do you know if they are considering it? Towson is not a peer school to UM-CP, so they may not do anything with that. Schools know that lower ranked schools will give merit, so they often won’t consider those merit offers. But, it never hurts to ask…UM may surprise you.

*it is difficult when her first choice will cost us so much more than some of the others. *

this will likely come down to what you (the parents) are comfortable paying. If you’re comfortable paying full freight for UM or PSU, then happily send your D. If you’re not comfortable paying that much money, then the choices will likely be Towson or Rutgers.

What are your D’s objections to Rutgers? What does UM-CP offer that Rutgers doesn’t?

@abmnj1, I hate to sound pessimistic, but Towson State is NOT a UMd peer so the comparison of offers is unlikely to have any impact. Was your D invited to the Honors college (or any other LLC)? This would make a big difference since some of the most exciting class offerings are open only to Honors college students. FWIW, I love it here at Maryland, and I do understand what you are going through right now. Best of luck.

D’s objections to Rutgers was too many local kids go there and that the campus is so spread out. I explained to her that with the amount of kids at Rutgers, she will probably never even see anyone she knows. She also doesn’t like that you have to take a bus from some of the dorms to the campus. Rutgers has an open house for admitted students coming up. My husband is going to tell her that we are doing it. Maybe he will change his mind when he sees it.

D just got into Delaware with $6000 scholarship. When I contact Maryland which is her first choice, should I mail a letter to both the financial office and the head of her major department? Also, who do I send the letter to in the financial aid office?

Give a copy of the UDel scholarship to the scholarship office. If that’s the same one as the FA office send it there. Some schools have different offices for FA and for Scholarships.

If her dept major does give scholarships, then send a copy to them. However, if the dept doesn’t give scholarships, then no point.

It sounds like your H really doesn’t want to pay for OOS costs. So, even if she were to get a few bucks from UM, will that be enough to satisfy your H?

mom2collegekids thanks for all your help and advice. I think if we get even a little bit of money from Maryland my daughter may be able to convince my husband to let her go there. Maryland financial aid packages come out April 1, do you think I should wait to see if we get anything since we didn’t expect money from Delaware or should I contact them now?

Thanks again for your help. This is my first time going through this and it is very overwhelming.

The bigger questions are:

Is Udel’s 6K scholly automatically renewable each year for 4 years?

Is there a gpa requirement to keep the Scholly?

I would advise waiting until you get the package from Md in your hand.
Keep in mind that there is a difference in the middle 50 stats at UDel and Maryland (where your D is not at the top of the pool at either school).

SAT Critical Reading: 540 - 640
SAT Math: 550 - 660
SAT Writing: 540 - 650
ACT Composite: 24 - 29

Maryland
SAT Critical Reading: 580 - 680 92%
SAT Math: 610 - 710 92%

Her stats SAT 720 M, 580 CR, 620 W

places CR her in the middle of the middle 50 for UDel and at the bottom of the middle 50 in CR at Maryland

Do not put her in the top of the applicant pool at Maryland.

Are you looking for the COA at MD or UD to be aligned with attending Rutgers and getting no aid from them? Do you think your D will be getting merit $$ from Rutgers?

As far as I know, we are not getting any money from Rutgers. I was just hoping for a little money from Maryland to bring it a little closer to Rutgers.
