negotiating financial offer

has anyone had any success getting more money out of rice? was it through a financial aid appeal or using other scholarship offers as leverage?
post your story. thanks

you havent gotten your financial aid package yet unless I am mistaken…

mine has been online under the financial aid requirements>Financial Aid award letter since friday

Maybe post under Financial Aid forums?

hmm. Id definitely email them and ask. If there is a discrepancy between your EFC and what Rice is giving you its worth an appeal

Rice gave us 10K less than our EFC. We are surprised since we thought that they are one of the better university for FA. I emailed them last week but nothing back. They are by far the worst when it came to FA for us and this is comparing them to JHU, Case, Brandeis. I won’t count Washu and Tulane since we were lucky enough to get full merit tuition scholarship to those schools (sooo happy!!!)

Hmm… interesting how everyone says Rice is giving them not enough financial aid. I am guessing that your family income has to be <$80,000 to get a really good financial aid package. Mine is $78,000, EFC is $5270 according to FAFSA. I’m getting $38,390 in grants and $1800 for work-study, so my family contribution is $6570.

yeah i got an awesome financial aid package…practically for free (about 6k/year)

rice seems useless for those above ~80K. I’m at 150K and I got barely 7000 from Rice, but Northwestern gave me over 20K. How lame is that…

150K is substantially greater than $80K! In 5 years of Rice financial aid, our EFC has always been the same as our FAFSA EFC. But if we made 150K, we’d be happy to get $7000 in aid from Rice and we’d be thanking them for being so generous! :)

Not to be a ****** but getting 150K means Jack ■■■■ depending on where you live and what other expenses you have.

my family is in the 100k range, and the EFC was about 18k (which is actually less than the FAFSA EFC). rice met the rest with a grant and a loan, but 18k is still too much so i think i’ll have to talk to them about certain circumstances. 100k is NOT a lot at all in SoCal, especially when putting 4 kids through private school AND when your dad works for the state, meaning BUDGET CUTS

In the 100k range as well, FAFSA’s EFC is 15k while Rice’s EFC is 34k…
