Negotiating Merit and/or Financial Aid?

We have been told by numerous people in our area that tuition is "negotiable" at most schools. Our son applied to/was accepted by 11 schools, and was awarded significant merit aid at 10 of the 11. Of course, his first choice is the school at which he received no aid. In terms of the all important "rankings" questions, 4 of the schools are quite comparable, the others are slightly lower. Paying full freight is not a realistic option for us. Suggestions as to how to go about approaching the dream school?

Does his first choice school offer merit $4. IF the school only offers need based financial aid, then there is nothing to “negotiate”. Do you have a basis to request a financial review (loss of job, unreimbursed medical expenses)?

It appears that Brandeis has five merit awards available for freshmen. If he has recent awards or achievements to update his application, he should be sure to let the school know.

They do have quite a few outside scholarships listed.
