Negotiating with the Financial Aid Office

Hi,

I received a terrible package from Williams. ($0) I don't understand because Amherst gave me a good amount of money. (I need the money but I'm not comfortable mentioning why here)

At first, I cast off Williams immediately, but now I'm having second thoughts because I want to appeal.

If I decide to call in and appeal, how may I go about doing it? I don't want to make them mad, or anything. Should I bring up Amherst at all?

I'm no expert, but bringing up Amherst in an appeal seems valid. The schools being so incredibly similar, Williams will probably consider the fact that Amherst typically gives similar amounts of aid, has a similar methodology for calculating aid and, actually, on average gives less aid than Williams. I suppose it's possible that Williams screwed up in calculating your aid?

Of course!!! You should let Williams know what Amherst gave you. Williams will GENERALLY match offers made by peer schools, which include Amherst and the mid-Ivies.

I've heard that financial aid officers hate the word "negotiate" and like the word "appeal", so you might want to keep that in mind when talking to them.

They'll probably do something for you, but they may not match your Amherst offer. They didn't match mine last year.

Williams set me a letter one week before decisions asking to confirm my citizenship.

I couldn't do it because I was getting a new U.S. passport at that time.

I emailed them and they seemed kind of insistent that I have it anyways. Should I bring this up? Perhaps it was a factor. I have my passport now...

I have very, very similar aid offers from Amherst and Williams. You should appeal to them, because theoretically they're both supposed to cover your needs, in a similar way.

Yeah...I think it's weird I got $0 from Williams and a good amount from Amherst... anyone else besides asadliaqat and me have the same situation?

I got $0 from W as well, but got $15-18k at Wes/ConnColl. They didn't match my other offers. It was a very tough choice.

Well, maybe Wes wasn't considered a peer.

justanotherCcer, you got me wrong. I said i have very similar aid offers from both as in both are giving me pretty much the same amount of scholarship. That's why I said you should appeal to williams, giving your amherst aid package as a reason why they should give you aid as well.

Oh oops, that came out wrong. Sorry. ^^
