Neighbor Annoyances

The people on the corner have a million kids and a dog, never go outside, do not take care of their yard. It used to be a beautiful house inside and out. Seeing how they neglect the outside, I shudder to think the damage they have done to the inside. Neighbors have asked me if they are renters but no, they own the place and are letting it run down.

I water the deer. That attracts the deer and then they poop in nearby yards and eat everybody’s flowers.

Personally I’ve loved reading your posts about your neighbor in the “say it here” thread.

We don’t have Hoa’s, but no rv’s, boats or company trucks/van are allowed in driveways (plus no overnight street parking).

Who makes that rule if not an HOA? Is it a city law?

Our neighborhood has plenty folks parking on the street. The neighbors across from me have a mini farm (this is a regular suburban neighborhood with about 1/2-1/3 acre lots) and they run a business from their mini farm. They have customers and workers parking in front of their house all the time. Next to them is a rental house with college kids. They park on the street too. Neither of these bothers me at all unless they park right across from my driveway because that can make it difficult to back out, but that is not habitual with either house.

We have neighbors with sailboats, RVs, and jet-skis in their driveways. Doesn’t bother me and I have never heard anyone else in the neighborhood complain either. We have neighbors that don’t mow their grass and let their yards go wild. I have never heard anyone say anything negative about that either.

This is all on display all the time so I think the type of person who wants a more manicured neighborhood is not going to be attracted to our neighborhood.

One neighbor has a wildlife habitat sign in their yard. We have tons of deer that a lot of people feed and water. We have occasionally had foxes which are really cool. Lots of birds and other wildlife too.

Lots of front yard gardens and yard art throughout the neighborhood. We have beekeepers and folks that keep bunnies and chickens. Lots of dogs and cats. Kids ride bikes and play basketball in the street. We have occasional block parties. It’s a pretty great neighborhood.

We are a mixed bunch from new parents with babies (folks down the street just had a baby boy last week) to retirees. Not as ethnically or racially diverse as I’d like, but there is a little diversity. I enjoy the electric mix. I like it when the college kids across the street practice the drums for their band. The only thing I can think of that annoys me is when a car parks directly across from my driveway, but that’s fleeting.

A few of my neighbors have a regular Thursday afternoon happy hour that they started during the pandemic where they sit out at the end of the driveway and chat.

We all MYOB and are friendly when we see each other. It’s just really chill. I can’t imagine living in a HOA neighborhood. Just would not suit me at all. I’m sure I would have plenty of neighbor annoyances if I lived in one of those.

Neighbors around the corner often park a car or truck on the side of our house for weeks at a time without moving them. They have a driveway and space in front of their own house so it is annoying.

Not the neighbors per se but their dogs. One neighbor, since moved, would let their dog out and when I went outside in my yard the dog would bark constantly. I couldn’t enjoy may own backyard. If they were out and saw us they would take the dog in but they kept it out a lot. Across the street their dogs bark at everything, kids, people walking, cars driving by. It seems to have gotten better but it sure was annoying. As for me. when I moved into the house the previous owner had English Ivy and Honeysuckle planted. It grows into the backdoor neighbors yard. I’ve cut down the honeysuckle and am working to keep it that way. The Ivy on the other hand is a pain. We’re on good term though.

Nothing (so far) about my neighbors here has annoyed me.

I’m always a bit nervous when D and SIL’s dog is here (side note: he is here right now for a few days). He is very sweet but he is LOUD! Our neighbors assure us they don’t mind but…

Regs like that are part of our City code, but we can park on the street overnight here.

@sevmom As per our City code, a vehicle must be moved at least once every 30 days. You might want to check to see if your locality has a similar code/law. For us, it’s to prevent abandoned vehicles.

H hates when people park in front of our house, but they are completely allowed by law. We don’t own the street. I tell him it’s good that we have all kinds of different cars parking there. It makes it harder to tell if we are home or on vacation if there’s no pattern. Just don’t block our driveway!

Our next door neighbors have like four cars, and no garage. So they park three of those in front of their place, and one in front of mine. Our yard layout goes: lawn, then sidewalk, then grassy “terrace” up to the curb. When I mow, and their @#$%$@#% Jeep is parked there, I do not mow right up close to the vehicle… so I end up with a roughly 10’ x 2’ unmowed patch until they go somewhere in the Jeep. I’m sure the other neighbors love our little green mohawk…

No HOA’s just city laws. No parking on lawns, no front fences, my backyard backs up to a lane so just a 4 foot picket fence. That said, love living here (even though densely populated we have geese, ducks, hawks, turkeys, foxes, a few coyotes, and I’ve seen deer walk down my sidewalk (most of the town has sidewalks, great walkability ratings). Main Street with shoos and restaurants runs through the center of town, super strong sense of community with street fairs, parades, fireworks, concerts in the parks, block parties, tons of local organizations with dedicated volunteers. Commission firm of government, most votes is mayor, the 4 others lead community departments. 3.4 square miles, 1 paid fire/police department, 2 volunteer fire departments. Some surrounding towns have overnight street parking, other do not, since our roads are older and some around for 300 years driving down streets with a lot of vehicles can be difficult, especially after snow. A local affluent town just proposed no gasoline leaf blowers and people are losing it a bit. Folks tend to keep their properties pretty nice, when lots are 60 x 100 it makes a difference.

I live in a neighborhood of fussy old men who spend their lives making their yard look perfect. Now my husband is trying to keep up with the Jone’s. :joy:

We live on a golf course. It’s not a fancy course. But seriously why buy a house on a golf course if you hate people retrieving their golf balls. We are happy that they take their golf balls. We have more than we could ever need

The feral children who live a house away drive us nuts.
They have one of those battery ride-on cars and pile in & go up and down the cul-de-sac, not paying attention to anything, getting too close to the parked cars etc etc.
Not us, but the woman down the street had her car keyed to the extent it had to be repainted. The FC’s parents had to pay $1,000+.
They’ve gone up on our porch, climbed the tree by the path up, come close to running into the garage doors. A number of nannies have come and gone because they are so difficult.

There are the Airbnbs whose renters have wrecked havoc on the neighborhood around our second home. Noisy parties late into the night, loud music, thefts of shellfish and firewood, parking on neighbors’ property (land is deeded right up to the street).

The neighbor’s son smokes dope which drifts into our yard. I cannot stand the stink of marijuana.

YES, we have a neighbor with a dog that barked non stop at all hours. We recently haven’t been hearing it - we are wondering if they are prohibiting it upstairs or something

The perpetual subject of our local paper’s Rant and Rave column.

We have an irrigation ditch behind our house. People use the bank at all hours for dog walking, biking, etc. (This is no bother, they are there and gone in a minute). HOWEVER, two neighbors on the other side of the ditch have dogs that bark at every thing going by. And one house lets the dogs out at 5:30am and they bark to be let back in until 6:30 without stopping. Winter is not so bad or so early, but in summer I like to sleep with the window open. The sun will wake me up by 6, but dang I hate those dogs at 5:30. More especially I hate hearing my DH whine whine whine about the dogs.

To irritate my nosy neighbor, whenever she’s in town in her Taj Mahal, I make sure to do my gardening in the backyard in shorts and a bra. And I’m not a skinny woman. She prides herself on dressing modestly and likes telling others about that.

I know that this bothers her because she has repeatedly told me in the past that she enjoys looking down into our backyard from her 2nd story window…“I just love seeing what you are all up to!” Then she proceeds to ask me questions about how come I’m not setting up my yard just like hers.  Um…because if i wanted to live in Las Vegas, I would.

Our neighbor has a motion detector suite of lights thatall face our backyard – when it’s windy and leaves, twigs, etc are coming down, it is like a Vegas lightshow!

S1 and his SO have a classic nosy neighbor; she once wanted them to weed whack along their side of her fence and when SO said she did not really have time for that, nosy neighbor (voicing her disapproval of their unmarried status) said “well can’t your male friend do that?”. So now we all call him Her Male Friend, or HMF.

This one is more amusing than annoying. We have rental units next door. The front townhome has had some interesting renters in the past. A few years ago, a couple (probably in their mid 50s) moved in. Every morning, the man would leave, dressed in a suit and tie at around 8. Shortly thereafter, the woman left for work. By 8:30, the man was back, changed into his shorts and T shirt and sat out on the front porch drinking beer and barbecuing. Like clockwork, at 5 he would dress back in work clothes and leave to allow the woman to come home from her job. Once she was home, he would return from “work”.
My DH and I were so amused…we kept wondering if we should tell her the guy was a deadbeat.

Probably either a deadbeat, embarrassed, or afraid of her reaction. Or used to lying to his partner.
