Neighborhood surrounding campus

Hi all--

When we visited earlier this spring, we approached the campus from the University Ave side, climbing the hill. S was turned off by the urban setting.

We didn't get to the other side of the campus, behind the quad where, according to the campus map, most of the dorms are located. What's the neighborhood adjacent to that side of the campus like?

bump-----any one out there have any info???

That side of campus is residential. Very mixed in terms of safety. It’s important to not judge SU by it’s surroundings, which leaves much to be desired (there is a nice downtown area and a mall). SU is really a community to itself- and a thriving, exciting one with incredible pride and spirit. Freshmen don’t go off campus much.
We made 3 visits to SU. The second one was for an admission event in August. The surrounding area was very deserted and my D told the admissions officer that she didn’t think she could go there because the town was so horrible. She is now a rising junior and has never regretted her decision (even with over 100 inches of snow on the ground).

Twoparents - that gives me some kind of relief. This is a big change for my daughter, leaving the Island, weather, and of course, leaving her family behind.
I only wish and pray that she loves Syracuse and makes it there.

Thanks for the info. S did not like Cuse, but my wife and I did. Looking at engineering.

Maybe he’ll read this and think about it more.

I’m using my son’s login…

SU alum here who wishes her son would apply!

One rarely leaves the campus. I knwo very few kids who don’t love the school once there. So much to do.

As to safety, I find the problem is that kids feel that they are in college, so all is well in their world. I drilled it into my two older kids, that anything can happen anywhere and does. They all need to be aware, and be smart.

Go back, if possible, in Sept/Oct. Ask the students. Go to the Dome. Walk M Street.

FYI: I graduated 25 (cough) years ago. I am not the only alum who still has an ‘ORANGE’ wardrobe!
