neighborhoods and dorms?

I got accepted to IU a few days ago but I'm not sure about the neighborhoods or dorms. I know its a little bit early but I want to know what I should hope to get now than getting screwed at the end because I didn't know anything about the dorms. What is the big difference between the dorms? Like the location, partying, and the basics. My plan is to go for business right now. I don't want something with a bunch of people who do nothing but party but i don't want to get stuck in some place where nobody leaves their room. Any help would be great!

Put Central neighborhood as your first choice. Hope for Teter or Eigenmann.

Here are my observations/opinions regarding the dorms on campus:

NORTHWEST (Briscoe, McNutt, Foster, Collins): With the exception of Collins, these dorms are located far away from EVERYTHING but the business school, so be prepared for a lot of walking. I probably walk several miles a day just to and from class. Or acquaint yourself with the bus system. The Northwest dorms have a massive party reputation, and after living here for over a month, I completely understand why. If you want to party, you’ll fit right in. I have found very, very few people living in NW who don’t like to go out. High concentration of business majors and athletes, because they’re close to all the athletic facilities. Collins is known as the more folksy, artsy dorm and that reputation rings true as well from what I have seen. Oh… and Foster and McNutt probably have the best rooms in NW; they’re bigger and they have air conditioning. Briscoe doesn’t (it is being renovated however), and apparently the rooms in Collins are like army barracks.

CENTRAL (Wright, Eigenmann, Teter, Ashton): Good spot on campus… very close to the library, pretty close to the auditorium and art museum, not too bad of a walk to most of the classroom buildings. A good balance of partying and studying. Wright is really old compared to the other 3 dorms in Central but it has a great food court that people always flock to (but the rooms have no air conditioning, unfortunately). Eigenmann has been recently renovated and it’s really really nice. I believe Teter has been as well. Ashton is a mostly singles dorm soooo if you don’t want to live by yourself you probably won’t want to live here. But you can’t choose the dorm you live in, only neighborhood, so yeah. For the record, the people I have met that live in Central are probably the nicest, chillest ones I’ve encountered at IU so far.

SOUTHEAST (Forest, Read, Willkie): Very close to the music school so high concentration of music majors. Also a ton of international students (although those are found everywhere, but Forest has so many). Freshmen generally don’t like in Willkie but Forest and Read have somewhat of an antisocial reputation. I’ll be the first to tell you that there are many, many exceptions to this stereotype. Sure, there are people who’d rather sit in than do nothing but there’s also a high concentration of social people in these dorms as well. I think the SE dorms are probably in one of the best locations on campus because they’re the closest to most of the buildings where your classes will be and there are great places to eat here as well that are way underrated.

Anddd… here are some old CC threads that do a great job of breaking down the dorms/neighborhoods if you want more info or another perspective. Some of it is a tad outdated but the information is still relevant for the most part:

Leila described them fairly well. Though it is always possible to find a group of people like yourself, no matter where you live, it is MUCH easier in central. Also the walking or busing is never terrible from any dorm so don’t let that change your decision. If you apply for north, go Foster, if central, go Teter. Apply soon though!
