I am a senior in highschool and got into these 2 majors....I'm divided between the two and have to make a decision in less than a week. Thank you!

NEOMED:
270K
6 years for MD
occupied summers
3.5 GPA and 24 MCAT (W/O writing) gets you guaranteed seat in med school
focus on primary care
about 100 people get in

OSU Biomedical Sciences Major
230K
8 years for MD
free summers (I probably will fill them with something academic though)
NOT guaranteed MedSchool Admittance
close to OSU medical center/research
about 20 people get in

Again, thank you. Everyday I talk about this with my parents and think about it because there isn't an obvious decision (for me) please help me make a decision

D. gave up both of these 5 years ago for non-accelerated bs/md (4+4) WITH GUARANTEED spot (3.45 / 27). She ended up applying out and currently at Med. School that was her original goal while in HS.
Nobody can tell you where to go. As of now, you have gone to several visits, interviewed at each, talked to current students and listen to presentations. I know all of that, becuase we have done the same. Nobody here on CC will have this experience. If you plan to have straight As and decent MCAT, it will not matter. Applying to Med. Schools is NOT easy (we know that also as D. has applied “regular route” while in bs/md. She had easier time because she already had one spot - in her program. That was huge advantage going to interviews, kept her more relaxed, by her own admission). So, basically, I am saying that you have to decide yourself…or flip the coin- which will be just as accurate as any outsider’s advice.

Have you looked at NEOMED residency match lists?

A cousin’s D is at NEOMED and have a close friend with two kids who are grads of NEOMED.

To be honest, I am far from impressed with the program and even less so with their match lists on the whole.

IMO, the program at tOSU will carry a lot more weight if you apply out down the road.

On top of that, NEOMED undergrad is at YSU, Akron and Kent all of which have a large commuter based population and are in Youngstown, Akron and Kent! The undergrad experience at tOSU will be far superior to that at any of the three and Columbus is a far better place to live for the next four years (minimum).

I honestly think this is a no brainer. If you are good enough to get into a program at tOSU for only 20 students, you’ll be good enough for the regular Med school application process. Good luck.

^In regard of selectivity, I was under impression that programs are about the same as OSU is NOT combined bs/md. Also, UG experiences are not comparable at all, since NEOMED is accelerated and there is only 2 years in UG. When D. was choosing, we have met very many families. They all had different goals. Some were clearly in favor of NEOMED as they were dealing with the second kid going to Med. School, they wanted quaranteed spot and as quick process as possible. That is why I have refrained from any advice since everybody is in such a different situation. Match process is OK, as long as one matches somewhere, MD is MD and I personally know one who matched to Mayo Clinic after NEOMED. I heard from several MD’s that it is all depend on your Board score, just like Med. School acceptance is primarily determined by college GPA and MCAT score. Do not have personal experience yet, D. is just finishing first year.
I am not standing for any of these, programs are so vastly different and all differences are known to OP. As far as opportunities to excell, I believe that they are everywhere.
