NEOMED or SLU Medical Scholars?

I got accepted into both programs, but I don't know which one to accept.

SLU Medical Scholars
- 8 year (4+4)
- able to apply to SLU's med school during sophomore year; if you apply to anywhere outside SLU med, your "seat" is rescinded
- not guaranteed acceptance into med school; have to go through mock interview
- ample research/volunteering opportunities
- keep GPA above 3.5, MCAT scores don't matter
- I've heard that about 3/4 of the students drop out, but I'm not 100% certain?

NEOMED
- 6 year (2+4)
- In undergrad all year (no summer vacations), except some breaks during winter and spring
- Guaranteed seat in med school
- keep GPA above 3.4, get >24 on MCAT
- more stress because of packed curriculum/not much time to do research

Also, I'm not certain about how SLU's med school and NEOMED's med school rank nationally. Is anyone in either of these programs? What do you like/hate about them?

I’m neither a current student nor considering SLU, but check out this website for student testimonials about the difficulties of the programs:

I’m considering NEOMED myself, and as far as I’ve heard talking to current students, the courseload is not nearly as stressful as it seems.

As long as you get at least an 8 on each section of the current MCAT you only need a 3.25 GPA to advance from UG to NEOMED. They really want to accept any non-science credits, as low as 3 on APs, duals, and college credits earned elsewhere. Your schedule may not be as onerous as you might think. If you want research let Akron know of your interest (saw your other post), they would like students willing to go 3 years with published research.

@Phloppy95 D also has Akron but is looking hard at UMiami. She didn’t apply to HPME but got full tuition with a Singer and a Foote Fellowship (no Gen Ed requirement). We think this is as good or better than HPME since for HPME students to maintain their guaranteed seat they need a 32 MCAT and a 3.7 GPA. With the investment Miami would be placing in D we figure she would get in anyway if she hit those stats. What do you think?

@ready Wow! Congrats to your D!!!
As I see it, NEOMED presents three key advantages: 6 yrs rather than 8 yrs, no cut-throat competition unlike many other pre-med or BS/MD programs, and close to home for in-state students. However, if these pros aren’t as important to your D, then I’d say to go for the most financially feasible option (Miami). Best of luck in your D’s college decisions!

go for neomed, slu is not guarenteed

Non-accelerated is a huge plus if looking for a full college experience. Sometime importance of developing as a person is entirely overlooked. It is very important. Having more time and alowing yourself more experiences is important.
However, for some others. quaranteed spot is of utmost importance. My own D. was accepted to NEOMED several years ago. She has chosen another non-accelerated bs/md program. However, her 4+4 program allowed to apply out while retaining your spot in a program. D. did apply out with great results. On the other hand, she was the only one who did so. The others in her bs/md did not bother, they were very happy to go straight to the Medical school in the program.
The fact is it is hard to predict how one would feel few years down the road. It is much harder to choose between programs that are not flexible. Sorry cannot help more than that. Very personal choice! The best wishes!

Hi Kmarcell,

I am junior looking to apply to NEOMED come Fall. Can you post your stats and also if you are from Ohio or another state.

Thx a ton.
