Hey is anyone alive out here?
This person just got rejected from all the universities and dream school. Does anyone has any plan on what to do next?

Congratulations to all who made it to their desired schools this year, and to people who faced but rejections, not all hope is lost yet. Sure, think about alternative trajectories for your education here or in some other country, but you can always try again. I know a good number of people who only made it to their dream school in their second attempt. I am not saying that you should be stubborn and persist in a futile quest of proving yourself, but merely hinting at the fact that people have come back from rejections and done wonders. Ultimately, both for people who made it and who could not, it is crucial to realize that your acceptance or rejection does not reflect your self-worth–after all there are a lot of variables that go into admissions (including luck) that are beyond your control. It might take you some time to come to terms with whatever has transpired in the past few weeks, but you’ll realize soon enough that there are many other ways of pursuing your ambitions and fulfilling your dreams. What’s important is to learn from your experiences and continue to better yourself. Good luck, young guns!

Anyone knows when Reed’s decision is coming out?

Successfully made my rejections/wait-lists to double figure. Finally understood the effing system of U.S college admissions. Things I learned in this stupid gap year:

  1. You have to be very very extra-ordinary to even have a minimal chance to get into elite unis, which I am certainly not.
  2. You should be able to show high EFC (generally starting from 10k - thousands of dollars) for mid-range unis, which my parents cannot afford in any effing way.
  3. The lower-tier schools simply want you to shine on your SATs for acceptance.

P.S: Scholarship cases for lower-tier schools might be different.

@Hellstein Same here, now I don’t even know which college to attend. Maybe some state university with cheaper tuition and in future trying again to get into top universities for masters

What are the typical stats of a students admitted at Jacobs ?

@Hellstein A SAT score that crosses the college’s 25th percentile is almost mandatory for great aid-seeking internationals. It’s like a cutoff. Quite rare for students not meeting this condition to get accepted. However, a lot of applicants make the mistake of placing heavy emphasis solely on stats. One needs to have good ECs and essays also to stand out. Above all, the most important and overlooked factor is ‘fit’. Can the college adcoms see you fitting into their environment ? That’s a big question too.

@CautiousCarrot My stats were above the 25th percentile in most of the cases.Yet, I have seen some of the students getting in those colleges with a far lower stats, ECs and okay essays. The differentiating factor?
EFC

Mine was less than 4k while their was more than 10k. Just to let you know, I guess the one going to Harvard was also rejected from handful mid-tier schools because being an OF student means that your EFC must be low.

Do you really think he was not a best-fit student for those mid-tier unis?

While EFC certainly is not the only case, it sure makes a lot of difference on the acceptance. Some colleges even mentioned in my rejection letter that if I could increase my EFC to said amount, they would simply accept me. And yes, they said they would meet full-need on their effing website.

Not only my case, but many of my friends who are more than qualified for an acceptance are also being rejected from most unis. This really makes me wonder the system in place.

@Hellstein It’s sad to see strong, deserving applicants being denied for financial reasons. What were your stats, if you don’t mind sharing? It’s always unpredictable and tough for internationals to get into any decent US college.

The Harvard guy could have been rejected due to ‘yield protection.’ Colleges reject or waitlist over-qualified candidates (in terms of stats and the overall application’s strength ) when they believe that such students will most certainly attend some other prestigious university. Or it could simply have been the aid factor like you mentioned.

@CautiousCarrot your response is genuine and yield protection thing is real.

Okay, the yield protection thing is real but does it apply to an international student asking for significant financial aid? You are automatically in a large competition if you are asking for significant financial aid
The Harvard guy is really good, but I think it has to do more with Harvard being need-blind and many others not. Did that guy get into high-tier need-aware colleges too?

The Harvard guy got rejected from St. Olaf. Literally, I can say EFC is the crucial factor like essay and ECAs for need aware colleges.

@RabindraNath The St. Olaf rejection has all got to do with tuft’s syndrome a.k.a. yield protection IMO. Colleges will also reject applicants who show little to no interest in their school.

@Momonepal Reed decisions will come out before April 1. They haven’t provided an exact date.

@Hellstein also, people tend to place a very heavy emphasis solely on stats, stats are needed but you also need to shine out through ECs and essays. Above all, the most important thing is ’ fit '. Do the adcoms see you fitting in their college environemnt or not ? Thats a big question too.

You simply copied my lines. Deserved to get banned
