well, tht's wut happened with me... i had essays written pahile dekhi ko... but the real one was just before the deadline..my brain works tht way ;)

good to see u back himalayandreams...
as regards ECs, the sort of EC you have is very important. if you show an interest in some particular EC, and that helps you match to a college, it helps a lot. A lot of LACs are looking for "their kind" of students and if your ECs point to an interest common to the college, you are in luck!

yo! i also vote strongly for ECs... many people have our images of sherpa people walking up and down the himalayas, so showing them other skills and achievements do lhelp a lot. at the same colleges that have been sending rep. to nepl ( as in grinell) know more, so just showing ur diverse interestes and capabilities help.

Basically I'm more into computers(EECS seriously) or Comp. Engg will do, Even Comp Sci (But I won't choose it over others)----- Only last resort.
Plus I'm uber fascinated over Open Source Movement, nearly had a fight with a MCSE friend hehe.
fanatic might have been the right word.
So, u see the point?

I'm planning to write such essays that show my passion towards these topics. is it cliche? Or should I go for it or avoid such things? Can someone help me?

Ok, u must've guessed who I am . Damn it!!!!

Just make sure you keep it simple.. don't put in a lot of computer jargons and that kind of thing. What might sound interesting to you might not be as much so to the reader. Make sure you get non-computer-fanatics (!) to read your essay and see if it makes sense to them.
Make sure you show your passion, not explain how much and what you know about computers or any topic!

Yup, keep it simple, dont write it in command prompt language, and since its a subject that people tune out of very easily, make sure that you make it extra interesting.

Thanks I'd take heed of those advices. I do know better than write
echo Hi
or something like that.
in my essay.
Maybe I can include some incidents like solving the rubik's cube for the first time, or formatting my HD in a venture to install FreeBSD. or are they too cliche or what?

writing a cliche essay isnt that bad if you are able to express your feelings originally and with sincerity.

Some of the computer jargons definitely show your familiarity with computers and I strongly believe that their usage in the application essay would not be a turn-off for the admission committee. Just make sure, you don't throw in a lot of tech-savvy words in every sentence.

"formatting my HD in a venture to install FreeBSD", ummm. depends on how and where do you want to use this experience in your essay. Make sure you highlight the lesson you learned from that particular mistake and possibly try to include an anecdote where the lesson you learned was instrumental in not screwing another important thing.

But dude, make sure you don't mention a lot of screwing things up with computers. If you are an aspiring CE or a CS major, the admission committee is possibly looking for a calm computer user who knows what he is doing and how to handle the ****. Formatting a hard disk for FreeBSD does sound detrimental to the application essay of an aspiring CE or CS major unless previosly stated when u have supporting anecdote.

When you are writing about your interest for debateable topics like open source software; make sure you don't offend all the Billy's supporters who may be there in the admission committee. Even I am an ardent supporter of open source softwares, but gotta make sure that billy's OS is still the fundamental OS, so I recommend you taking a middle stand and yet persuade people on the pros of open source movement.

I don't know how much would this help to all those people who are finding it hard to decide between CE, CS or EE, but thought of putting this up.

CE= In most of the schools, two programming languages, usually, C++ and JAVA; probably a theory class; some classes on computer architecture like memory chips, different kinds of drives and cables, computer networking, and some classes on electromagnetics. Ideal for students, who love programming and crunching numbers but yet like to know about how a computer works in hardware level. ( oh I love this major ) Eg. Most of the people working in companies like Intel, IBM, etc.

CS= Basically for the bunch of people who love sitting infront of computer, just programming or writing codes. Certainly a better major over CE if your interest is just with the software aspect of computers. Software engineers are basically CS people. Eg. Most of the people working in companies like microsoft and google.

EE= Take out some of the CS classes from CE and add more classes on Electromagnetics, and CE becomes EE. Ideal for all those students, who don't like much of the programming stuff but love all the physics and sciences involved in lighting a bulb.

If you were to consider demands for either CS, EE or CE major in USA; I would say probably CS takes the cake followed by EE and then CE. If you were to consider demands for either CS, EE or CE majors in Nepal; I would say CE, CS and then EE. Oh, I laugh at all those people who keep on talking trash that CE or CS has no prospect in Nepal. Do not listen to those trash talks.

But again, there is a lot of flexibility in moving from one of those majors to another majors atleast until your sophomore year. So even though if you are unsure during your freshman year, its not gonna be that bad to switch to one another in your sophomore year.

I think this computer thing is making the post boring. I suggest you PM each other hai. Again no offence meant. :O:O:O:O:O:O

i meant :o:o:o:o

When was talking about academics and admissions, fun?????

So you think that thing should carry on?

And yea it's my 100th post. :D:D:D:D:D:D

I think that post would help genericgenius and others no end, which is what this thread is for.

Congrats on your 100th post though I must admit getting to know about it with 6 smileys isnt the most "fun" thing I've heard on this thread.

YA YA. Where are you from BIB anyway? In nepal or US already? got anywhere or still not applied?

just thought it would be helpful for some people, so thought of tossing it up there. I personally don't think, all people are only worried abt college application, essay writing and HYPS. There are people who like to know what they would be studying and what majors would be appropriate for them, and I being a CE, thought it would be handy for aspiring CE or CS majors.

Well, I am in Nepal ajhai. And as for where I got in, its not something to be discussed on an internet forum but over tea with a hankerchief in hand. :(

lets talk about Nepali films

Besides a few, Nepali films are Goo and they have a long long way to go. But, it's improving steadily which is good.

Lets talk politics! No wait, too boring.

Howz college life going basistha?
