I am interested in colleges with lots of nerds and a good business school or economics program. Any size college is fine as long as it fits me but I don’t want a rural campus. I really want to know if there are any public schools with lots of nerds. I don’t consider myself a party person and like to have a place where there are parties but you aren’t secluded from not going. I especially want a place where the dorms are quiet if possible. Thanks for helping me! If you have any ideas please comment because I don’t know where to start for this college process.
What are your academic stats? What can you afford?
In terms of housing, you can request quiet and substance free residence halls at a range of colleges.
@happy1 I have a 4.4 gpa all honors projected to get 29-32 or higher after prep. I can afford anything really though if it’s $74,000 or above it’s on the pricey side.
@merc81 thanks so much! Any college ideas too?
Carnegie Mellon
Harvey Mudd
UC Berkeley
UIUC
UT Dallas
Any geographic restrictions? Are you only targeting public universities?
@twogirls I am targeting public and private. I don’t really care where it is as long as it’s in the US or Canada. I am not a huge fan of Massachusetts but I might consider going to college there.
Georgia Tech has a good business school , is in a city and certainly nerdy
@3scoutsmom I would prefer a college that is ranked in the top 50 if possible. Thanks so much for your suggestions though feel free to comment more.
You have not provided us with information about your ECs or unweighted GPA, and of course you do not have actual test scores yet. Are you a rising junior?
A top 50 may or may not be possible. I would focus on fit.
@twogirls yes however I have taken two practice ACTs which I scored a 29 and 31 on (used old ACTs so pretty accurate at a test prep). On my preACT I got 29-32 range and I got a 30. PSAT10 I got a 1450. I am currently in tutoring and have recently improved my English score by 4 points which will raise my ACT from the practice. ECs I am top ten in the state for DECA (international business club), on the DECA leadership board, was in investment and trading club, on my high school’s girls freshman and sophomore tennis team. I am active in my youth group and volunteered at my library last summer to help with the summer reading program. I have ran three community service projects for my DECA event (root beer float sale made $500, books, toys, school supply drive 300 donations, custom school shorts sale $1,000). All profit I made I donated to World Food Programme or a local charity. I have made honor roll every quarter. I helped my school win a service award through DECA. My ECs are only okay but I plan to improve them.
@twogirls my unweighted is 3.85. I also play club tennis at my local tennis club. My courses are all honors and AP U.S history. Next year I will take year 5 Spanish (I am not a native speaker) but I have excelled in it.
Your in-state schools will have nerds
U of Rochester
SUNY Geneseo
TCNJ
Emory
You will find your people anywhere. My daughter is at a large public, is very happy, and considers herself to be a “nerd.” The campus and dorms are quiet and any parties are off campus.
@twogirls thanks for your recommendations, any other schools like u of Rochester a lot of people have recommended that school to me? I would prefer a bigger if a state school like u of Michigan but I will look into those other schools.
Rice is another one. GW. Do you live in Michigan?
Ridiculously hard to get into, but Stanford literally calls itself “nerd nation.”
@twogirls no but it has a very good business and some nerds. I looked at Ohio state it was a beautiful campus but I am not sure if I would fit in.
I agree with U Rochester. Also Case Western. Probably nerds at every school. I agree with @twogirls .
