Nerd or just smart?

How many of you consider yourselves hardcore nerds? What about just smart, but not nerdy? There is a difference! Or nerdy and not smart perhaps? Or maybe neither...?

Nope. Just someone who is willing to learn. What is smart anywayyyyyyyyyy…

I still have not figured out what a nerd is other than the guy with a tucked-in button-up shirt and taped glasses.

^well said.

to what are we comparing “smart” and “nerd”? I guess I would have to say I’m an English/grammar nerd. I love to proofread things and find mistakes. I hope to be a book editor someday. :)

I am an english/grammar nerd as well…language nerd in general actually. Though I don’t hope to be a book editor…I’d rather write the book I think.

And by nerd I mean someone who tucks in their shirt, is very socially awkward, plays starcraft quite a bit, and doesn’t do any sports (save a no-cut one). I realize how limiting a definition this is…but common sense should guide you.

Well I want to write books too…just anything with books (in English) suits me perfectly. While I don’t tuck in my shirt, have a good number of friends, don’t even know what starcraft is, and do theatre (my sport), I consider myself a nerd at my school. Most of the kids around me wear Hollister and Abercrombie, have about 10 times more friends than I do, “play” with drugs and alcohol, and center their lives around their sports. Not everyone’s high school is like Saved by the Bell or something.

is quizbowl a sport?

Then I would be “smart”?

im just suprisingly smart, like you wouldnt expect me to know anything but once it comes down to the work and tests (i never cheat) i put on my smart hat and get good results, i kinda like it. lol

I read chemistry textbooks for fun. Does that count as being a nerd?

Smart, but definitely not a nerd

Yes, I do consider myself a nerd. I’m the guy who does math problems for fun, the guy who spends large portions of his time dissecting computers, etc.
I don’t do the shirt tucking, I don’t play Starcraft, and haven’t worn my glasses in months, but I also have no social skills, at least with the people at my school, for the same reasons as flowersofglass

I thought I was pretty nerdy. Then I went to an engineering camp with a friend. I was the coolest one there.

I consider myself smart, not nerdy. Of course, that’s assuming the rather typical socially-awkward devoid-of-fashion-sense nerd stereotype as definition. I’m nerdy in the sense that I’m pretty intellectual, but I don’t have the other traits typically associated with nerds.

But yeah I’m totally a nerd about grammar/language. XD

Im just super smart. A nerd about politics and the economy.

Basketball team captain would make me smart then. And Im in no way social awkward

I’m actually a geek as I’m smart, obsessed with science, and not afraid to talk about my opinions. (a nerd is shy, yet smart and obsessed with something)

Nerdy, yes. (I like looking at them A+'s, and I’ve got my fair share of awkwardness.) Smart, idk. (I’m pretty street-stupid.) Multiple intelligence theory, ftw. I really think it’s about time people start considering different areas of ‘smartness’, and moving away from hailing the logical brain so much and deriding others.

I would say that I am very “smart” artistically, and that my brain was very global. I still cannot decide which side of my brain is more developed, my right, or my left…
