I was accepted to Case with a good amount of merit aid, which was very exciting so I was feeling pretty optimistic about it. But it seems everywhere I look (ahem studentreview.com ahem) talks about howits not that great a school. And to go there if you have money buts its not really that worht it. Im jsut a little worried. I was also seeing a lot abut nerdiness and people being antisocial there. im not incedibly outgoing bt I am in no way nerdy, i know absolutely nothing about computers beyond what is necessary to use one and I dont know im just worried that If i went to Case I would be passing up a better and more fun social education at another college. Has anyone else heard or experienced anything to either back up or refute these ideas?

My son has friends there and they are not nerds. They also find plenty to do. Yes, there are students who never leave their room and are on their computers all day long, but they are an exception not the rule. Case students also take academics pretty seriously, but still have fun. You have to remember that the comments you read (mentioned above) are just from a few students. When you compare how many students have graduated from Case to just a handful of comments that is not a very good representation. Have you visited Case? I have been there several times with my son (directly on the campus) and in the area (alot), and the Case students are very nice. No, it is not a "party" school although I'm sure you can find them just like everywhere else. Please read my posts along with several others on this Case forum because there are a few of us that are quite familiar with Case. My son will be going there next year and neither he or I have any qualms about him going. I really suggest that you visit. Good luck with your decision.

I actually am doing an overnight on campus next month. Thank you for the insight. I dont know i just got really scared when i read those opinions...

it really is all about what you put into it. if you seek opportunities you will find them. i know people who have gone there and hated it, but those people overloaded their course work (aka master's in Biomedical engineering in 5 yrs) and didn't participate in EC's. i know two students there now, both softball players, who LOVE it. they have tons of friends, go out a lot, and love their school. it all depends on how you look at it.

Also, I would think that being located in an active cultural area of University Circle and so near to Cleveland activities, there would be LOTS to do. And chances are that your will find LOTS of others who share your interests and you would certainly not be isolated on campus. THere's music, museums, art, sports, the lake, the Flats entertainment district, etc. I'm not from the area, but when I visited, it seemed like there would be many choices to fit any interest.

I read the studentsreview.com as well. One thing, some of those comments are a few years old now and you'll notice that one reviewer said his whole opinion of the school changed when the president (?) visited his dorm and asked how the school could be made better. Also, some say CWRU is looking for more rounded students now in admissions and the atmosphere might be getting better. I guess it wasn't long ago that alcohol was banned on campus, but in the College Prowle r guide it says there is a campus bar called The Spot and a bar in the north village called the Barking Spider. So 2 places right on campus; you don't need a car or shuttle bus. The Pro wler book also says for under 21 there's the Arabica coffee house, the Algebra Teahouse in Little Italy (live jazz), and Leutner Commons (university program board events). Hard to believe all the comments about how boring it is (was?). There seems to be more to do here in walking distance than a lot of schools I've looked at.

Most of the people that end up here at Case are more concerned about academics than their social life. After all, that's what they are paying to come here for. I have been very impressed with what Case offers to do compared to what some of my friends' schools have. Since I came here last fall I and/or my friends have: seen a few movies on campus (sneak previews too), gone to campus and local plays, gone ice-skating, seen the Cleveland Orchestra, gone shopping/out to eat, gone clubbing at the Flats, frat parties, events at the Farm (land owned by Case out a little in the country), gone hiking at the MetroParks, seen the Cleveland Art Museum, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and more. If these things sound neat, then Case is probably the right place for you. If not, there's a pretty good chance that you would enjoy another school better.
I'm not saying that there aren't Friday nights sometimes where people find themselves studying or frantically finishing papers that are due at midnight, but these are few and far between.

I have to laugh about this post. My son & I were at Case last week for the liberal arts event and yesterday for the regular check out Case day. Everytime we are there we are just amazed at the variety of students we see because of the "stereotypical" students Case supposedly is rumored for (nerds, ugly girls, no cute guys, etc.). To make a long story short the students here look & act just like students at every other college we've been to with the exception that they do take their academics seriously. Do they have fun, act silly, etc. You betcha!
