I'm aiming to qualify for the national math Olympiads (USAMO) and the national chemistry Olympiads (USNCO) next year, but will it matter at all? Only the top 1% get into USAMO and less than 10% get into USNCO, so it's pretty competitive. I'm doing well academically and I have a decent amount of ECs, but I'm worried if Columbia won't care for qualification to those Olympiads. :

Yes it will, look at the stats thread. Under major awards, it says “for example, USAMO, Intel, etc.”

Every school will care for those qualifications. I don’t see why any school wouldn’t.

If you get both, you can get any school with standard process, even Stanford.

^ not true really…
USAMO + twice Natl. Physics Olympiad + bio natl. olympiad won’t get you into Stanford guaranteed.

-anecdotal

They are very, very good to have though.

1) you shouldn’t be trying doing your best/testing your knowledge/going for accomplishments simply for college…

2) YESSSS they are both VERY, VERY legitmate haha; U.S Olympiads = top level of whatever subject its testing.

3) With that being said, it won’t guarantee into super competitive colleges (Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, etc. etc.). But then again, almost NOTHING will. I had friends get into MIT without any US whatever, and friends with 4x USAMO get deferred and waitlisted. Work hard on the rest of your app and keep doing your best though, these 2 qualifications will add ALOT of weight to your application. Good luck, sophomore…(or freshmen? haha overachiever!!! I’m pretty impressed :D)

No, I have a passion for math and chemistry, but I was just wondering if any colleges besides MIT actually care for math and science olympiads :P
