Haha, if the title doesn't tip you off to how much of a dork I am nothing will.

So I've been researching Villanova and all I've heard from everyone is that it's a huge party school. Everyone drinks, everyone goes to off campus parties or dorm parties every weekend, whatever. My dilemma is that I have absolutely no desire to join in on this. I come from NYC and I'm used to being constantly surrounded by a ton of things to do. My friends and I constantly go to shows, comedy clubs, museums, we shop in soho, we're very chillaxed. I don't give a **** about drinking and have no desire to go to loud, obnoxious frat parties. NYU seems more my type of school, but I was accepted LSP and I don't like the program, so Villanova seems my next best option. I'm just concerned about being surrounded by nothing but a bunch of preppy, rich white kids for four years.

So here's my question. Is it possible to fit in at Villanova if you don't feel like getting smashed at a party every weekend? Is there stuff to do around the school besides party, or will I be bored off my ass sitting in my dorm room. I'm not sorority material either. I'm into theatre and things like that, but I'm not sure if I'd be good enough to get into a college production or if Villanova even has the opportunity. Anyone who can give me an insiders opinion? Thanks in advance.

A lot of people call it VillaNOfun… I highly doubt it has much of a reputation of being a party school. In fact, that’s the first time I’ve heard it with that reference. You shoul definitely not have any problems in terms of partying… there will be plenty who don’t. And Greek life doesn’t play much of a role at all.

Seriously? I swear most of the people I’ve asked about it, some who have gone there, know people who have gone there, etc. have referred to it as a party school. Plus some of the threads around here seem to be enforcing the stigma.

Plus, no fun isn’t great either. God I’m going to miss New York.

Firstly, the ‘Villanofun’ label is completely outdated.

Secondly, on the typical Thursday night… you’ll definitely have a group that go to ticket parties, house parties, or out to the bars. But, at the same time you’ll find a group that will stay in 'cause of a test the next day or they have work to do. People also take their extracurricular activities very seriously.

Lauren8822–you’ll definitely find people you’ll be able to hang out with next year. Personally, I’ve fallen in love with the city of Philadelphia this year. There are so many great concert venues, the Met, Citizens Bank Park <3, the Rodin Museum, South Street, shopping (in Ardmore and the city), the Theatre District, the Kimmel Center… just to name a few.

Thank you lauralice, I appreciate the feedback. If I do choose Villanova, I hope what you say is true and I can find some fellow nerds. I also hope I can learn to love Philly. I’m kind of a proud New Yorker and I’m worried I’d make too many comparisons, but Philly has been interesting from the handful of times I’ve visited.

Thanks again, you have helped to make me feel a bit better.

Asian nerd right here, and an incoming Nova freshman. Lauren, the above description about yourself sounds like me I’m not into preppy stuff or excessive drinking, things like that. Alright I do drink a little bit, but I definitely tend to stay away from loud obnoxious crowds and wild parties. From what I’ve heard from current students, it’s definitely not a huge party school, there’s no (or not much) pressure to drink if you don’t want to, and although a lot of students are rich and preppy, you can always find some cool people who are just like you and me I’m going to 'Nova for sure and I’m very excited for august.

Hope that makes you feel better and makes the right decision.

Hiya batdoi, yeah it does make me feel a bit better to know there’s at least one other nerd out there. xD At least I know there will be other cool people around.

It’s not that I don’t drink at all, I just prefer not to be drunk. I’ll drink if the opportunity arises, but not a lot and not to often. Same with partying. I’d go once in a while, but I’d really prefer to do other things most of the time (or all of the time honestly. It doesn’t matter to me).

Well as of now I’m still very on the fence about NYU and Villanova, but this thread has helped me a lot.

I’d agree- Villanofun is so outdated. Villanova is definitely more of a party scohol than it is spread around in the forums. rolls eyes

If you had my guesss on it, there is a ratio of

25% big parties: 60% people who are a mix who can go either way depending on the night: %15 who don’t party or drink.

Just an observation. Seriously, find your niche of group— 5-15 people out of 1700 you have to pick from… and your college experience will be amazing. There def. will be people like you there… You just have to find them! :)

lauren 8822, i’m from nyc as well and have the same concerns as you! i’m not much for partying, drinking, sororities, etc., and the whole preppy stereotype was a major turn off for me. but i loved the school when i visited it! i’m torn! have you decided whether you’ll be attending yet?

Hey lijan. Yes, I actually decided last week to send my deposit to NYU. I did visit and like Villanova, but I don’t feel it was for me. There were a bunch of kids sitting on the grass in school t-shirts listening to music and playing dodgeball or whatever. It was cute but not really my thing. I prefer to be in the city with the concrete and the subway trains.

Neither of them gave me any money and the cost was pretty much the same. NYU was more me, but Villanova was a nice school too.
