If you like Texas, UT Dallas is very nerdy (doesn’t have a football team and celebrates the chess and debate teams), good for CS and not too selective. Also offers very nice merit scholarships.
UTD is so nerdy that the bookstore sells “Keep UT Dallas Nerdy” t-shirts. My son (who will start there in fall 2018) wears his all the time.

UMBC, Rochester Institute of Technology and more selective Rose Hulman.
UT Dallas is good, but very selective for their CS degrees. UT Arlington is another great school, but is on the selective side for STEM. You may want to consider Texas State and UTSA also. They’re less “nerdy” but they both have excellent CS programs that are not very competitive to get into. Both are the main safety schools for UT throwbacks.
@coolguy40 @traveler98 I took a look at UT Dallas! I’m wondering if the CS major is competitive to get into? Do you have to apply to get in major or are you directly admitted?
@ZenyattaPT, the CS major at UT Dallas is not restricted. Students are directly admitted into the major, and there is no separate application for the CS major. @coolguy40, perhaps you’re thinking of the very competitive CS program at UT Austin?
UT Dallas is top tech school and their CS program is very competitive. Yes, you will need to apply separately, similar to UT and A&M. It’s that way with most colleges because of the popularity of CS majors. UTSA and TX State do it differently. They admit based on capacity. It’s still somewhat competitive, but not cutthroat. Another decent small school that has virtually no competition for CS majors is Tarleton State University(part of the A&M system). It’s a small university in Stephenville TX, 45 min outside of Ft Worth. I got my master’s there. It’s like a miniature College Station. Totally laid back and friendly.
Um, @coolguy40, you’re mistaken about UT Dallas. My son just applied there for fall 2018. There is definitely no separate CS application and the major is currently not restricted in capacity.

Another school that is less selective (49% admit rate) with a distinct nerdy vibe is Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.
