Nervous about my chances...

Hi! I wanted to apply early decision to William and Mary, but financially that wasn't the best option for my family, so I'm really nervous now about RD because I'm white, out-of-state, and female, (I live in New Jersey) and I know that's the most competitive field. I just don't know what my chances are...so I guess I'll give my stats and see... :)

-ACT: 30 (w/o writing...730 on the SAT writing section)
-I go to a large public school in NJ, about 600 students
-Rank: in top 10% (top 2%)
-GPA: 4.0
-APs: I have taken/currently am taking 6 APs ( I received 5s on the two tests I took last year (US History and Language and Composition)...my other classes (not the APs) were/are honors
- Sports: 9-12 Lacrosse, 3 yrs Varsity; 9-10 Soccer, JV; 11-12 Cross Country, 2 yrs Varsity
-Other ECs: Class Cabinet (student gov't) 9-12, Girl Scouts 9-12, Tutor at Library 10-12, Summer Volunteering for Special Education Students 9-11, member of Cultural Club, worked/work as a lifeguard
-Awards/Honors: Honor Roll/High Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society
-Leadership: Treasurer Spanish Honor Society, Peer Mentor (assist the Freshmen in getting used to the high school...I lead a group of ninth graders), Leadership Award for Girl Scouts, I have also receieved my Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards for Girl Scouts.
-I have two letters of recommendation, so hopefully they will help
-I think my common app/optional submission essays are well written and show my personality

I'm really into history, and that's one of the reasons I love W&M so much...so hopefully the admissions office will like that I like history a lot! Thanks for your feedback!

Glad you’re interested in W&M. Your classes and class rank sound very competitive (assuming those 6 APs and other courses included some of the most challenging high school courses like calculus, physics, and the fourth level of a foreign language). You appear to be very active outside of class and if your class is 600 students we tend not to expect leadership (we realize it’s harder to come by in larger classes).

Our middle 50% range for the ACT is 28-32 (31-32) for out-of-state students. We’ll only consider whichever score is highest (your ACT composite or your best SAT Critical Reading + Math).

We do not take your intended major into account so we don’t prefer history majors to any other major. Since you apply only to W&M and not a particular major, it’s not really fair for us to preference particular fields.

Whatever the outcome, you’ll never know unless you apply. That’s the best way to ascertain whether W&M is an option. If you get in, great. If not, it is no reflection on you but merely a reflection of how competitive our pool is. For more on any student’s chances for admission, check out our Admit It!
