Why can't I just find out about finalist NOW??? argh. I'm going to OU (univ. Oklahoma) next year, and I'm from out of state, so if I don't get NMF then my financial aid opportunities are slim...but if I get it, I have a $75,000 scholarship.

When do we get notification about NMF? the website says sometime in Feb.

Friday, sounds good. haha, yeah I know the odds and everything, it's just that I have a lot riding on it...it would suck if, say, my SAT report got lost in the mail between CB and NM, or....starts thinking positively

just curious, will we find out at school or in a letter at home?

You do know that even after getting F as a junior you have to validate your scores by taking the real SAT as a senior and getting a certain score

not true
they accept sat scores taken in junior year or senior year
Feb 3--nmsc mails finalist notification to high schools
Feb 8 nmsc notifies finalists @ their home address

astrife---I am a Senior, and I already took the SAT as a Junior. I wasn't aware that you could be named Finalist as a Junior? I dunno though I'm just nervous.

norther---thanks a lot! so next wednesday. whew.

you can't be named finalist as a junior. Your high school is notified in Aug before your senior year that you made semi based on your junior year psat. you get finalist status next week, as a senior, if you made it.

El1jah---haha yeah, I met with Annaly Beck over the summer when I was staying with my sister, and then again when I went out for the Texas A&M game. She told me that I had a very good chance to get F.

Can someone fill me in regarding finalist status? My D will be a NMF soon, but will be attending Smith College. I hear that only certain students receive $$, especially if parents work for big businesses; which is not our case. What's the lowdown in possibility of receiving something for finalist status?

from the NM site (nationalmerit.org...you should check it out!)

"All winners of Merit Scholarship® awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishmentswithout regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluatethe Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay."

Yeah, it does , thanks alot. You had mentioned that NMS receive $2500. Is that it? I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but there must be more to it?

Not all NMFs receive scholarships. There are a some college-sponsored scholarships (and the amount varies from $0 to full ride), corporate-sponsored, and a handful of NMF sponsored scholarships.

BJM--I honestly don't know much bout the scholar awards...I'm focused on finalist at the moment :)

From what I understand, every scholar gets ~$2500. Select scholars get additional awards, depending on, well, I'm not sure. there's more info at nationalmerit.org...

A scholar is only allowed to recieve 1 Ntl Merit Scholarship. That means if they get a school sponsored or corporate sponsored scholarship, they're not eligible for the 2500.

bob--true, I guess I was wrong. It seems that I'd still be correct in saying that scholars are guaranteed $2500....if you have a choice between awards, surely you'd pick the larger one.
