Nervous about Yale EA! chances!

Hi! I am a very very nervous rising senior applying to Yale (like half of the ppl on this board lol) and many other colleges

Anyways, here are my stats

Ethnicity: African American
Location: NOVA..not Fairfax though.
Income: Very very low income; large family; parents did not go to college. dad works crappy job 24/7

GPA: 3.77 (UW) 4.73 (W)
Rank: 2 out of 366
PSAT: 195 (National Achievement Semi-finalist hopefully)

SAT’s: Superscore: 1380/2110, highest composite: 2070 (after 3 retakes.....should i retake in October? I haven't taken any prep classes and the avrg SAT at my school is 200 pts below average! But then again I dont want "Taking the SAT" to be on my list of EC's haha)

ACT: will take in October, hoping for 33-34

SAT II's: 700 Spanish, will be taking US History and English Literature

Course schedule: Very rigorous. IB diploma candidate. Enough said

7 on my IB Spanish exam (SL)

AP’s:
AP World History: 5
AP Euro History: 5
AP English Language: 5
AP Spanish Language: 4...boo hoo
AP Bio: 3 (with good reason)
AP Scholar with Distinction!!! (I’m the first to get this award as a junior; most AP students get 1’s, 2’s, and a few 3’s.)

EC's, Awards, etc.-- relatively strong, but in CC standards, mediocre. I've received mostly school/county awards but a couple national/state ones.
I have a lot of leadership--- I will be Prez of spanish club, and hopefully president of Service Club. I can list on and on award everything I do.....but you never know who is reading your threads hehe.

Mentor for little kids
Over 300 hours of hospital volunteering
P-T job at Burger King (yum)
Harvard Book Award recipient
Governor's summer school (selected, state-wide)
Many many school awards (language student of the year, chemistry awards, etc.)

I think that you're going to get in.

Where else are you applying btw?

Where does the 3.77 put you in terms of class rank? I think you need to be very near the top of your class to be a contender. If you are very near the top, then you're within the range of admitted students, but so are lots of people and less than 10% get in. Be sure that you have a well-rounded college list. Best of luck and congrats on your successes so far.

I'm number 2.........but BARELY (meaning that I could have been number 1 but got a couple of B+'s (90-92) last semester)

I'm also applying to UVA, William and Mary, Harvard, U of Chicago and Columbia.

You should get in. It's Yale! :)

Woah, B+'s are 90-92? That's intense. I think it's looking pretty good for you... Good luck!

I think your profile is a good example of when 2200+ (or 2300+) SAT scores are not expected or required. I personally would want to be higher than 2070 when applying, but i don't think it's going to keep you out of contention.

Your SATs are a bit low, but there are definitely more important factors than that that you have going for you. Ideally get it higher, but I think you still have a nice shot (especially as a 1st gen. URM)

If you can get a 34 ACT and 7x0 on another SAT II, you're going to be very strong academically as a minority candidate (sorry to have to throw that extra part in there, but I hope my bluntness is hopeful).

If you can elaborate more on your ECs that'd be helpful. Don't worry about awards... unless they are part of your EC activity they mean very little. What you have as ECs so far is not particularly compelling.

I think you have an okay chance, but it really depends on the strength of the minority/1st-gen EA pool.

It looks like that pool is going to be pretty dangerous to swim in from what I've seen so far... =/

LMAO ...

i think that you're going to get deferred and then rejected
but i think that you should apply to Miami University in Ohio.

If there were a string of 4 or 5 witless jokes on Yale in any given thread, you'd probably laugh yourself into a coma. You're quite possibly the most obnoxious anti-Yale, Harvard elitist on CC.

Despite the (friendly) rivalry between Yale and Harvard, I don’t see Yale students talking trash about Harvard on the Harvard board on CC. I suspect Harvard would NOT be delighted to know that among its representatives on CC are newly admitted students like piccolojunior and Rosh420.

Dweebs like Rosh and Piccolo were a big part of the reason i chose Yale over Harvard.

huh...rosh is just a funny dude. He could be saying it about stanford, princeton, harvard, or MIT and I'd still laugh. I got nothing against yale...if I did then I'd be making fun of princeton and MIT too, but you don't see me doing that either.

Also...anyone who says "dweeb" in the year 2008 exists to be laughed at.

^^ Coming from the same individual who wrote on the Harvard vs. Princeton vs. Yale vs. Stanford thread on July 22:

Guess what piccolojunior? Most of us (who have sense) REALLY do.

rolls eyes

Also...Harvard elitists who laugh at overdone, dimwitted Yale jokes in the year 2008 exist for...really no reason that I can think of. Why do you exist again?

^to style on people like you who are maaaaaaaaad :)

Also that post you're referring to was part of a dichotomy, you seriously think the last guy is as cool as the other three? Come on now....thanks for doing research on my posts though. Better submit that to STS and win first place or something.

This thread has gone seriously OT. Stick to the OPs questions or I'll close it down.
