I just submitted my Fall 2010 application to the UW Seattle campus last week and set up my whole MyUW account. I'm here wondering if I have a shot at getting in.

[In-state applicant]
GPA: 3.74 (Top 8%)
SAT: 1670 (1110 CR+M)
Extracurriculars:
- I'm the A&E editor for my school's paper. We were just awarded with a Pacemaker (basically the Pulitzer Prize of H.S. journalism), and placed 2nd at the national convention in 2009.
- I've played soccer every year of high school and ran cross country my junior year. I have a varsity letter in both.
- Member of National Honor Society
- Part-time job ever since I was sixteen.
- Camp counselor 9th grade at a bible camp.

That sums up everything except the writing section, which I'm confident I did well on. My personal statement was about the paper. I wrote the cultural essay about there being another type of discrimination in high school outside of race and religion, which is popularity. Then I wrote a quick 3 paragraphs in the additional section explaining the 2 C's I got my freshman year and how I've changed since.

In a nut shell, that's my application. Do I have a chance?

You are certainly in the running. Strong enough GPA, but your SAT is quite low. Good EC’s. You have a good chance, but admission is getting tougher every year. Have a back up.

It depends. Are you first generation? What kind of AP/honor/running start/IB classes have you taken? Which high school did you go to?

Good thing you are in-state (about 80% of students they admit are in-state).

Your SAT scores are a little bit low. If you would give the scores for the Reading and Math sections individually we can get a clearer picture. The UW-Seattle average Reading score is 530 while the Math score is around 620. Also your GPA is slightly above average for UW (average at UW is 3.72).

Your activities are good. It looks like you enjoy doing them and, for the most part, you are doing them for a prolonged period of time.

Also I hope you didn’t slack on the writing section. UW lists them as “very important”.

It was a good idea to apply early.

I’ll be the first kid going to college in my family, and I attend Timberline High School. It’s not a competitive one by any means, but not necessarily a bad school either.

I’ve taken one AP english class (aced it), and 4 honors english/science (one C my freshman year, As and Bs after that). I got a 3 on the AP english lang. test. I also have 3 years of spanish, which I believe exceeds UW’s standard of 2 years.

Oh, and I also took a New Market web design class over the summer and earned college credit, but there wasn’t much of a place to mention that in my application.

My SAT spread is…
Math: 530
CR: 580
Writing: 560

I’m still awaiting my November test scores. I took the SAT in June and October, and got the exact same score in every single section.

Anyways, I definitely did not slack on my writing. I had my journalism advisor (also a UW grad) read over all of my essays and he told me they were solid. I also did the optional writing section as well.

My back-up school (which I’ve applied to already as well), is WSU.

And as a sidenote I’m also applying for AFROTC, but I never mentioned that in my application.

I just got my November SATs in!

CR: 650
M: 530
W: 600
Total: 1780.

I feel a lot better about my scores now, and with that in mind, have my chances gone up?

I’m pretty sure you have a great chance of getting in. Your new SAT score is good enough for UW since a friend of mine got in with ~1700 last year. GPA is about average too so yea you’ll probably get in. I’m only worried because of my SAT a little on GPA. Hope both of us get in yea :D
