I have an unweighted GPA of 3.75 (weighted=4.3) and an ACT score of 31. My extracurriculars include Marching band for all four years (will be a section leader next year), Model U.N., a Girl Scout working towards the Gold Award, Students for Peace and Justice, the school newspaper, came in second place for a school essay contest for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and was a finalist for the Ernest Hemingway Award for creative writing last year. I also got a short story published in my school literary magazine and took a course at the University of Chicago over the summer.

I'm also from an under-represented minority, if that even slightly helps my chance.

Is my GPA really low for Emory?? I take all honors and AP classes if that makes it any better...Also, is my ACT score about average, and are my EC's less than most people's? Any help that you can offer would be stellar! Thanks!

Because emory has accepted so many Ed applicants this year, people are saying the decision rate for regular decision will see a drop. Based on your stats, i would have said you be perfect for ed. Given that your applying regular decision, your GPA is definitely in the bottom 25% and your ACT score around the 40%. Your ec’s are decent and the Uchicago course seems impressive. Honestly, i will say it’s a reach for you.

You are a junior, right? Your previous posts say that from what I can gather. You also said that you were retaking the ACT. Chances are that you will go up and this would definitely help you. If you don’t go up and decide that Emory is your first choice, apply ED1. I think that you have an excellent chance of admission ED!

So, what is the average GPA for Emory? If I boost myself up a little, would that slightly help my chances? Would volunteer hours (I’m going to volunteer at the town library) help me more? The teacher who leads the student newspaper says that I’d be a shoo-in for the editor-in-chief position next year–do more leadership positions help me, too?

I’m so scared I won’t get in! It’s one of my two top choices!!

Emory RD decisions are due out on April 1. You should read through the accepted student stat thread for this year on April 2nd and see who got in and what their stats were. That would be most helpful.

Your extracurricular activities sound great, but your GPA and ACT score are kinda low. & I agree with yuxuanchen about Emory’s acceptance rate for RD dropping this year since they filled so many seats with ED applicants. If you demonstrated a lot of interest in Emory (visited campus, etc.) then I would say you have a really good shot. If not, it’ll be a reach. In any event, hopefully I will see you on campus in the fall!

FutureDrSteven - The OP did not apply to Emory YET. She is a high school junior still. She still has time to see how the ED rate affects this year’s RD acceptances. Yes, her GPA and test scores are a bit low but she has time to bring them up a few ticks, which would help her. Plus, she is a URM…that does help.

ooooo she’s a junior. Definitely go for ED1 or 2. And you still have time to raise that GPA a bit. Based on your username, it seems like you’re South Asian so i wouldn’t really consider that URM. Good luck!

Haha, it’s okay. It is confusing. So, if I retook the ACT and got a 32 or 33, would you say that would at least even out my GPA? I know it’s really low…

My class rank is also about 50 something out of more than 800 students (I think the paper with my rank disappeared, so I don’t know exactly what it is), if that makes anything better.

It will definitely help if you can increase you ACT to 32 or 33 and apply ED1. Remember the pool is often more competitive with ED2.

My GPA was a little lower, but it was because my freshman GPA was lower. I think that it helped that my GPA improved significantly every year with an upward trend. Admissions recognizes that sometimes freshman year can be a little shaky. I also added a note to my supplement to explain my grades. I don’t know if any of this applies to you or not.

Another thing point about your GPA,did you take a rigorous course load? If you did take a lot of AP classes or Honors classes this will help justify your GPA.

Your underrepresented minority status will also help. Show a lot of demonstrated interest. Good luck on your ACT.

Emory is BIG on level of interest. Visit campus the campus. Go to the local information session. Meet with the Emory Rep. when he/she comes to your school. Get to know the rep and email them with any further questions. All these things and more are actually listed on the common app. Emory Supplement as a check list! They want to know that you did your research on the school and that you really want to attend. It does matter.
