Nervous Senior for The University of Washington-Seattle

Im currently a senior in High School at a VERY competitive well known school in Illinois. (My family CAN afford OOS tuition)
I have a 3.9 weighted gpa and a 3.5 unweighted (My unweighted for UDub is what im nervous about)
I got a composite score of 30 on my ACT 29E 31M 31R 28S and a 9 on writing
I have a total of 4 AP classes- APUSH, Psych, Bio and Gov
Im a A-B student
2nd semester of junior year i did very very well and show growth in my grade trend

I dealt with depression and anxiety during my sophomore year and have done a lot better during junior year because I seeked professional help

I have been on the honor roll every year in high school
I just recently got awarded as an Illinois State Scholar, which only 300 kids from my class got (There are about 900 kids in my graduating class)

I founded and am president of the animal welfare club at my school. Im a student ambassador for the school and a peer helper, kind of like a one on one mentor. Im a studio helper in the after school photo studio and was a class leader for 3 years for give a thon (a giant donation event in Dec). I also was on MUN, Student council and student congress. I have 300+ community service hours. I have interned at a political organization in my town and at the local vets office.
Received art awards for photography.
I’m Jewish (don’t really know if that helps) but im looking to get involved with the schools Hillel

I have talked to the admissions counselor at the UW a couple times and I had a one on one meeting with her during my visit during my spring break. I also have a connection with a professor in the field I want to go into at UW and I also met with him during my visit. He said he would love to recommend me to the admissions people (even though UW doesnt accept recommendation letters) but Im guessing he could just said an email or something so hopefully that increases my chances.

UW is my number 1 and if I get accepted im for sure going there, im just very anxious about getting accepted. Also I just read an article that they received the most applicants this year and are accepting less out of state which really scares me.

sbkorn28: I think there is a difference in recommendation letters from the outside, and recommendations from an institution’s own faculty. If you have a professor at the UW who wants to recommend you, have him do it. I think that will definitely help.

I think upward trends in grades always look good to admissions. If you look at the University of Washington Common Data Set, they do look at rigor.

Around here, people grouse about all the spots that go to OOS students who pay full freight. That could be YOU!!
(Don’t worry, OOS folks are welcome in Seattle, we’re nice here!)

I wish you luck!

I applied to UDub also as an out-of-state applicant from Missouri. I think your ACT score is fine for UDub. The admissions team will see your upwards trend so don’t worry too much about your unweighted GPA. Your extracurriculars are impressive, especially the 300 community service hours. I think you are a competitive applicant for the University of Washington. You worked hard to get where you are at, now just try to relax until next month! Good luck!
