Net Price Data For Selective Private Colleges

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Tell him what he won, Don Pardo.

Here is the next tier of selective private colleges. Sorted by net price for the $75K-$110K income range. I figured this is the most common income range but I’m really just guessing. Does anyone know the most common income range for private college applicant families??

^It depends on the particular school, but for top colleges, around half the students tend to be full pay. For such schools, that would put the most common net price at full COA.

Here are median family incomes for students enrolled at a few “elite” colleges:

$272,000 WUSTL
$200,400 Dartmouth
$186,100 Princeton
$168,000 Harvard
$158,200 Amherst
$155,500 UVa
$154,000 UMichigan
$134,500 UChicago
$104,900 UCLA

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/college-mobility/
(site has numbers for many other colleges as well)

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/college-mobility/ seems to have an odd definition of “selective” versus “nonselective”. UC Merced is listed as “nonselective”, but it is more selective than San Francisco State, CSU Bakersfield, and others listed as “selective”.

I am stunned by the median salaries in post #23. I had no idea. Median means that half are above that number.

They aren’t the highest either. #23 is A random selection of top schools. Wash u is highest. and UCLA isn’t even near the top. But in other measures it’s also revealing. Vanderbilt has more students with parents from the top 1 percent than any other school. Boston college for instance is number 22 on the median income list at 194k and 16 percent from the top percentiles. 70 percent from the top 20 percent. Their best stat for me was a really good average salary for grads and upward mobility in income which was strong. . Some smaller schools like Amherst and bowdoin all look the same. Plug in any elite school (they selected the top 65 schools which are a mixture of sizes).

@tk21769 and @collegehelp :open_mouth: Maybe I better rethink what I’m going to wear when we drop off D18 at Amherst College next month.

@meddy. Too funny.

Do you find it odd that two college educated full time hard working professional parents with 15+ year (guessing as they have 18 yr old college applicant) experience wouldn’t exceed $200k+ income level? Is it that people are hiding their incomes or college degrees are not worth much any more?

Really? I know many teachers who have been professionals for 20 years who don’t make $100k. Not all families are two parent, or have two incomes. They may live in Nebraska where working for an insurance company will not result in a $50k income for many.

$200k is in the top 7% of household incomes. Even allowing for the fact that households with two college educated workers are overrepresented in this category due to higher pay levels found by college graduates, it is unlikely that such households universally have incomes that high.

http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/info-Degrees_that_Pay_you_Back-sort.html indicates that relatively few college majors are associated with median mid-career pay over $100k.

@CupCakeMuffins Odd? No. Distressing? Hell yes.
