Netbook + a PC laptop? Or just a single Macbook Pro?

So here are my 2 options:

1) A cheap netbook to carry to classes and take notes, plus a decently priced ($700 to $1000) PC laptop to keep in my dorm room as a desktop replacement.

OR

2) Just a single Macbook Pro (15 inch) that costs about $1800 that I would use in my dorm and also carry to class if I see the need to.

Which do you recommend?

we offered to buy the same for Son. He decided he would rather have only 1 laptop, and have it with him at all times lessens the chance that the one in the dorm could" “disappear” while he was gone, which unfortunately happens in college…

Having two laptops to take care of, transfer files between, etc, just seems like too much trouble.

That being said, it could work if you got a cheap netbook and spent $1000 on an actual desktop, then figured out some way to transfer files quickly and effectively.

I’d still go with the single machine, myself.

I’m curious why a single 15" macbook pro is an option but you won’t consider a 13-15 inch Windows laptop. There are portable and powerful Windows PC’s that are competetive with MBP’s. I mean, I’m not saying you shouldn’t get a mac, just pointing out that you are not considering all options.

I am typing on my first Macbook, a used one purchased on ebay LOADED with software for $650. I did not want to go Mac until I knew it was for me. Now I will never go back. There are great finds via a reconditioned on on apple.com or ebay. It does not have to be as expensive as you think. And don’t forget student discounts. The 13 inch is light and I carry it to work and back now that my older netbook has a hard drive failure. I think having only one hard drive to manage works best anyway.

Why not just get a desktop along with a netbook, rather than a laptop with a netbook? You’ll get far more power in even a cheap desktop than you will in a $1000 laptop.

If you just use the netbook for notes and internet browsing, then a large flash drive should be sufficient for file transfers.

be a man!
do the right thing!

Agree with ThiscouldBeHeavn - why not get a desktop and a laptop? You could get the equivalent of a laptop in a desktop for maybe half the price. Or, you could spend $700-1000 for the desktop that would far surpass the $1800 Macbook in terms of performance. Since you already have a netbook for portability, this would work.
