Since NETC and Strawhats are on the same weekend this year, I need to choose one or the other! This will be my first year auditioning for summer stock so I'm kind of new to the whole scene. I've heard that most of the theatre companies cast from Strawhats, but at the same time it's hard to get a job from it if you're coming in as a newcomer. I've heard a lot of positive things about NETC too, but do I have a better chance of getting cast if I go to one over the other?
Any advice/insight is appreciated!

I think you should look at the participating theaters attending each audition, and then research their seasons and see which location holds more castable opportunities for you.

Submit your application to attend both. Unlike SETC, which has an auditioned pre-screen, both Strawhats and NETC are resume review. It is difficult to get a spot at NETC if you are an MT female, and are a freshman (or even a sophomore). It seems to be a smaller number of kids they invite to participate, therefore sometimes you may not get invited until you have quite a few shows/college years under your belt. So I would apply to both, and that way you are covered. And if you get an invite to both, then you can research theatres attending. etc. And it truly is a shame that they fell on the same weekend this year. Good luck in your summer work journey!

My son did get a audition spot and a job out of last year’s NETCs as a freshman. Nevertheless, he did say the number of participating companies seemed less than he’d heard about Strawhats. He didn’t attend Strawhats since he didn’t get a slot (he submitted at the last moment.) As others have mentioned, I’d submit to both and if chosen to attend both, then eliminate one based on companies participating, locations, etc. You sacrifice a registration fee, but it would be worth it. Just the simple numbers would lead me to believe you might fare better getting an offer out of Strawhats. More of these large audition conferences are filling up earlier and earlier so it’s good you’re getting to it! Good luck to you!

I too suggest applying to both…

(1) for the reasons listed above.

(2) for the following reason – While it is not ideal that they are the same weekend, there is a silver lining to this for auditionees… if accepted to both, an auditionee could do one on one day and the other the next. Because they overlap this year the companies in attendance at each will likely be different for the most part (although some companies will send one representative to one audition and one to the other). The two auditions are a train/ bus ride apart. Also – companies have the option of registering for StrawHat to receive the videos of the live auditions, and for access to the database. This is another opportunity to be seen by hiring companies.

My son has a Strawhat audition scheduled for Sunday morning.
Would it be better to audition Friday?
Does anyone know if there is an advantage to going earlier or do the theaters/companies
Generally make decisions after they see everyone?

Most companies are going to multiple auditions (some multiple conferences… some also holding their own auditions separately, either before or after). There can be a bit of saturation that happens as things move forward though a weekend of auditions. But, companies will still call back people that they are interested in, who may be right for their season.

Really six of one… 1/2 dozen of the other… you just never know. There are no guarantees…
