What do we need to bring to connect to internet at berkeley?

You can connect through an ethernet cord in the dorms or your laptop can go wireless on campus.

is there cable already in the dorms or do I need to buy one?

An ethernet cord? Yes you need to buy one, they are not that expensive.

is there wireless in our rooms?

Usually not, but you may be able to connect to air bears from some dorms. I lived in Clark Kerr last year and there was no wireless, only in the computing center. But you can always bring a router.

In the units, there is wireless in each study lounge, and depending on how close you are to the study lounge, you can get wireless. But who uses wireless anyway? Invest in an ethernet cable - its loads and loads faster. Of course you can use AirBears but thats really slow also.

For ethernet connection, you need to install the cal connect cd and some sign up.

do most modern laptops come with PCMCIA Ethernet cards? Do we need them to connect? Or is just Ethernet cable okay?

You just need an ethernet cable.

Most modern laptops have their own Ethernet ports.
