NEU's acceptance rate, and SAT scores are all fairly good. How come it's only ranked 80?

Well, first of all they are ranked based on a lot more things than just the acceptance rate and SAT scores. Second, they are good, but they aren’t really good and certainly isn’t amazing. So all of the top schools and all of the second-tier schools are above NEU. Then other “good” schools might be above because of the various things they rank based on. A huge university has a harder time with the “percentage of classes under 50 students” part, and a small private one has a harder time with the stuff based on funding.

Well, it’s 26 for business :T
And 13 for international business, so I’m satisfied with the rankings.

Northeastern has jumped 70 spots up the rankings since 2001. It’s on US News’s most up and coming schools, ranked at #2. Northeastern truly has been making great strides this past decade and it’s only getting better. The issue is that due to it’s non traditional structure (co-op + 5 year graduation) it’s been hard to compare with other top unis. But with the addition of the 2 co-op 4 year graduation route, and the fact it’s getting more selective every year, Northeastern will continue to jump up the rankings. It will crack the top 50 within the next 5 years, I’m positive.

who knows?

for example, boston university has fairly equal SAT scores and a much higher acceptance rate, and yet its ranking is far higher than northeastern’s.

one thing that sets northeastern back in the percentage of students to graduate in 6 years. since it’s usually a 5 year school to begin with, this percentage is lower at northeastern than at 4 year schools. also, there’s a possibility that they underrate the school’s teacher-student ratio. many students are on coop and not actually in classes for part of the year, and maybe they are still counted into the school’s overall student-teacher ratio. just a thought.

regardless, the school has been steadily climbing the list for the past few years.

the reason there is a higher acceptance rate it because boston u is much bigger than NEU

How come it’s only ranked 80?

Because 6,7 years ago, NEU was not the school it is today. It was around 2004 that NEU was way up on Princeton Review’s “Long Lines and Red Tape” list, and when I came in 2006 we were still complaining about the “NU Shuffle”, where getting anything accomplished was a total disaster. Not long ago this was a “commuter school aimed toward the blue-collar community” (Boston Globe’s words, not mine) that didn’t have fancy dorms or ridiculous dining halls.

When I was a freshman all the seniors would talk about how they were shoe-ins even without good grades, good SATs, good ECs. I can’t believe the difference between the current freshman and the people I knew graduating in 06. It’s an entirely different league of students. This doesn’t even feel like the same school, and I mean that in a good way.

Other people are right, also. The 5 year deal hurt us in rankings for a long time. Still, the biggest reason for the jump is just a total change in quality of students, faculty, and general atmosphere of NU.

where do you think NEU will be in the next couple of years?

President Aoun has been on an absolute tear. He came from USC and i guarantee that Northeastern will be structured similarly to the trojans. Give it between 5-10 years it will break top 50. I’m legacy here but they cut the football program so im going to Cornell = (

Well if the 5 year program is an issue, they pretty much solved it. They have a new 4 year plan with 20 co ops no?

There was always a four year option. You can do whatever you want. They are just advertising the four year plan more this year.
