neuro department

how good is the neruoscience department? I found that they have the neuroscience major that you have to apply for and yadda yadda yadda, but i'm interested so i was just looking for some input. thanks!

Paging Neurotic. Is Neurotic on CollegeConfidential? (He'll be able to tell you.)

ok, thank you! :)

Hi there!

Umm, lessee.

First, a question: Are you planning on doing neuroscience for grad school? If so, know this: This will give you a great head start. You will be able to take classes that no one else (well, pretty much, except for those damned echols kids, bleh (-: ) can take. You'll get first dibs at upper-level neuroscience courses. You will be introduced to concepts, labs, and procedures that will set you apart from plain-jane bio or chem or psych folks looking to do grad work.

Professors at UVA include:
David Hill http://faculty.virginia.edu/hilllab/hill.html
Masashi Kawasaki http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mk3u/mk_lab/index.htm
Otto Friesen http://minerva.acc.virginia.edu/biology/Fac/Friesen.html
DeForest Mellon http://minerva.acc.virginia.edu/biology/Fac/Mellon.html
Iggy Provencio http://minerva.acc.virginia.edu/biology/Fac/Provencio.html

Check them out. Also, check out the Neuroscience home page.

Here's the thing: A neuroscience undergraduate program is pretty unususal. It is great for getting a good grounding in neuro-specific information. However, if you have other interests, you might want to combine it with another major, since it is really specific.

Is it good? Seems good to me. I haven't seen rankings or anything, but the profs are good, labs do interesting work.

thank you so much! that really really helps, you have no idea. :) i really love neuroscience and i was so excited to find out UVA had a department. just a few more questions if you don't mind: I know that only 25 kids are selected for it but i was wondering how many actually apply, are there only somewhere around 25 or are there a lot more? Also, how "hard" is it to double major with neruo? I do have other interests but i think that neuro is where i'm headed as far as grad school and all that goes; however, i also know that it is a pretty narrow subject base. Do many neuro majors typically double major or something along those lines? once again, thank you very very much!

Most people don't double major. I know one girl who does, who has more energy than 3 average people. :) Besides double majoring, you could minor in something else, or use your electives to explore other stuff.

Neuroscience is a pretty hard major--up there with physics, math, chemistry, cognitive science, that sort of thing. You will need to know a lot of raw information, and even more concepts. Some concepts are pretty tricky--not intuitive.

As far as applicants, I have no idea how many people apply. I will tell you that just about any time anyone asks me what my major is and I say "Cognitive Science/Neuroscience" I get a really funny look of bewilderment. So I don't think there are too many--but it is rumored to be hard to get into nonetheless. One tip: if you don't have every singlelast prerequisite, Dr. Hill (who is a really great guy) will let you take them at the same time as the Major. (You know, if you have the wrong Calculus, or no Chemistry or something like that.)

thank you SO much for answering all my questions, really, you're a lifesaver! ;) i looked into some of the stuff you said to and i'm very excited now. i seriously doubt i will try to double major, but i'll come to UVA next year with, provided what they say is right, somewhere in the 50s of credits so i have some hope that they will help me with majors/ minors, but i figured neuro (if i can get into it) would be pretty darn demanding. THANK YOU again and again!

You're welcome. Good luck! :-)
