How was neuroscience for you? Was it pretty difficult? I'm a junior in high school and I'm pretty interested in neurology. I used to be really interested in anesthesia but I'm not sure if I can handle the high demanding difficulties that it carries along with it. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE NEUROSCIENCE MAJOR?!?

It sounds like you’re interested in neuroscience and medical school. First, separate those two things. Major in neuroscience because you’re interested in neuroscience, not because of the possibility of specializing in neurology after medical school - that’s at least 9 years away, and your college major will play no role in that whatsoever. Basically, don’t even worry or think about medical specialties for another 7 years, at least.

In the meantime: neuroscience. I got interested in neuroscience because of my high school psych classes but wanted to take a more “hard science” approach to the brain than psychology offered. What I have really liked about neuroscience is that it’s really interdisciplinary - I’ve been able to pull in math, computer science, psychology, and biology to learn about the brain. I’ve also gotten really involved in research. The difficulty of the program will vary depending on the school and your own personal strengths, but it’s similar to a biology major in a lot of ways, with some additional psychology and math components, perhaps. If you’re a reasonably strong STEM student, it could be a good choice.

What kind of math is involved? I have a minor phobia of math but then it gets fun when I understand it. And what do you want to pursue a career in after college?

Neuroscience is not inherently math-heavy, though there are certain branches that are more math-heavy (like computational neuroscience). Personally, I’ve found math more interesting when it has a purpose and I see its relevance. This has made math a lot more enjoyable for me in college than high school, especially as I’ve gotten more into research. I’m planning to go into research for a career - I’m currently in the process of applying to PhD programs and fellowships, and hopefully I’ll eventually end up as a research professor (many, many years down the road…).

Wow thank you so much! All luck to you mate
