Hi; if I want to eventually work in neuroprosthetics would it make sense for me to have my undergrad major in materials science and engineering and neuroscience?
Hi, what exactly do you want to do in neuroprosthetics? Are you asking if you should double major or which one to go (single program)? Neuroprosthetics is an interesting field.
If you want to get into the micro side of neuroprosthetics, then I would consider material science engineering or maybe even polymer science and engineering. Materials engineering would give you a great foundation for bioplastics, biopolymers, and materials that go hand in hand with neural networks–both synthetic and natural.
A degree in neuroscience would give you a great deal of knowledge as far as how the brain works and interacts with the rest of the body. But obviously neuroscience is more tied into psychology than engineering. Both are great choices though!
Here is what I would do. I’d look into materials engineering programs…or even biomedical engineering… that also offer courses in neural engineering. Then on top of that I would take extra classes such as neuroscience, brain and behavior, biochemistry, neurobiology, etc.
Hope this helps
Hi uranus2020 thanks for the feedback! So throughout the application process I have been solely focused on materials science and engineering so im definitely going in for that. Its just that recently ive become more aware of what I actually want to go into field wise which is where the neuroprosthetics type thing comes in. Basically im just wondering if I should really go for the double major, just do a minor, or if its necessary at all. I am also thinking that grad school is a definite so im not sure if that impacts your thoughts at all. Thanks again!
