Neuroscience and Behavior Major Questions

Anybody taking this and can give me their thoughts on it? I'm pretty much only applying to schools that offer Neuroscience as a major and Columbia caught my eye.

Is it a challenging major? Are you planning on going to medschool, and is it well suited for a double major with another science major? I've got plenty of questions, these are just the first couple I thought of

Thanks in advance!

I'd like some thought on this too. Thanks for posting.

The Neuroscience and Behavior major is very popular at Columbia. It's interdisciplinary in that 5 of the 10 courses required for the major are psych. courses and the other 5 are offered by the biology dept. It's perfect for premeds (in fact the faculty go so far as to advertise it as such) in that it's flexible with regards to what courses you can take, not overly demanding, and some of the major requirements are also premed requirements (e.g. bio C2005/2006). The big course for neuro majors is neurobiology, which is a year-long deal. The first course which they recommend you take is Mind Brain and Behavior, which is a sort of introduction to the brain. It gets mixed reviews. Columbia's very strong in neuroscience...they'll be building that new neuroscience research facility at some point in the (near?) future, and the faculty includes big names like Eric Kandel.

Is it feasible to take double major in neuroscience and biochemistry?

hmm, you know i'm not really sure. it's probably possible, but it'd be extremely tough to do. if you're premed as well, then i'd say you probably can't do it. keep in mind that the core alone is also a very heavy set of requirements. i should add that biochem is probably one of the toughest majors at columbia. so yeah, if you want to double major, you'd probably do yourself a favor by pairing neuroscience with something else unless you truly love biochemistry.

Yay, thanks! It sounds like Columbia's quite dedicated to their Neuroscience and Behavior program.

I'm also considering Brown, Rochester (both with BA/MD), UVA, Duke, Dartmouth , JHU, and WashU@St.Louis for a neuroscience major.

How does Columbia stack up? (try and be unbiased! :P) I know they're all pretty difficult to get into but I think I have a fair shot at all of them (look through my posts for my stats if you want to assess)

Thank you to all!

Oy. Thanks for that. I'll see what happens if by some miracle, I get in. -_-;

I don't know too much about the programs at the other schools you've listed. I'd imagine that hopkins would have a solid program simply because it's a good science school. I do know that Dartmouth has a solid neuroscience program. One of the big guys there is Michael Gazzaniga, who has done a lot of groundbreaking neuroscience research and has written lots of popular books on the subject. in any case, columbia's definitely up there in the field, and if neuroscience is your passion you definitely couldn't go wrong...

Thanks! I'm about to go ask on the dartmouth boards now...

I don't know if my stats are up to par with Columbia standards... sorry that I don't feellike postingthem,but they're around in the thread's ive made if you guys wanna look and let me know what you think.
