So im in my first year in college and I did pretty well in first semester, although I'm peeved that I took engineering physics and got a lower grade than my friends who took the easy route, and now I have to start thinking about which major to choose. I was wondering if anyone knows about the neuroscience program at McGill (difficulty, mostly.) I find neurosci to be EXTREMELY interesting and cool, but medical school is my first and foremost concern, so I was thinking about taking an easier major that I still have interest in (anat and cell bio, pharmacology). Thoughts?

I do not know about specific program that you are asking. D. is Neuroscience minor. She is junior in senior standing and has had many Bio and Neuroscience classes. At her school, Neuroscience classes are easier than other Bio classes. She is very interested in Neuroscience, but has no plans to pursue it professionally.

The difficulty of neuroscience as a major depends a great deal upon the school. Younger D is a soph neuro major already engaged in research and is taking upper-level coursework. At her school neuroscience is considered a more difficult major than most of the other bio sub-specialties and has more required courses than any other major offered by the university.

So, neuro as a major–it depends on what you enjoy and the curricula at your school.

McGill is very strong in some aspects of neuroscience (no school is good at all aspects of this very broad field!). Pursue a major that you will enjoy studying and mastering. McGill’s neuroscience is appropriate to prepare you well for premed.
